“The person who tries to live alone will not succeed as a human being. His heart withers if it does not answer another heart. His mind shrinks away if he hears only the echoes of his own thoughts and finds no other inspiration.”

– Pearl Buck, Novelist

Great Minds Don't Always Think Alike

In 1643, Isaac Newton was born into a poor family. Newton eventually paid for his schooling by cleaning wealthier students' rooms. Newton discovered that he loved science and math, though he was only an average student. Therefore, it was amazing that he completed a graduate degree at the University of Cambridge and then developed original scientific theories. He explained the movement of the planets and proved that white light is actually made up of all the colors in the rainbow. Most famously, Newton also identified gravity after an apple fell out of a tree and hit him on the head. He even contributed to a new form of mathematics, calculus, which allowed mathematicians to understand the nature of space, time, and motion.

The Eiffel Tower, the famous structure standing in the middle of Paris’ Champ de Mars, was first opened on March 31, 1889. Generally considered to be one of the most recognizable pieces of architecture in the world, the Eiffel Tower was named after engineer Gustave Eiffel. It was Eiffel’s construction company that designed and built the tower just as they did the Statue of Liberty in New York City in 1886.
The architectural marvel stands at more than 300 meters high, which made it the tallest standing structure for a brief period of time. Not to mention, the entire iron tower weighs an impressive 7,300 tons. Fifty to 60 tons of paint has to be applied to the structure every now and again to keep it from rusting. There are three floors with a few elevators to help tourists travel up and down the tower.

(A)

Mary: “Hey, I saw you two falling asleep in class!”
John: “Yeah. I burned the midnight oil last night preparing for my final exam.”

Tourists love to visit America, and when they do, they usually make sure they stop in New York City. One place in New York City that ranks as one of the most visited destinations is Grand Central Terminal. Not to be confused with Grand Central Station, which is the post office across the street, this iconic train station is the largest in the world, with 44 platforms and 67 tracks. Every day, 750,000 people pass through Grand Central Terminal. Many of them stop to gaze at the ceiling, which is covered by constellations. Another famous part of Grand Central Terminal is the information booth. At the booth, the attendants answer more than 1,000 questions per hour while the famous four-faced clock stands above. As most visitors know, a visit to New York City would just not be complete without strolling through Grand Central Terminal.

You have never been to a puppet show like this. For one week in March in the city of Valencia, Spain, the streets are taken over by giant fallas. These are tall puppets, some of which are up to 15 meters in height and made of wood and papier-mache. Each neighborhood backs its own falla, with the fanciest ones costing hundreds of thousands of dollars. On the morning of March 16, the city awakens and finds its streets occupied by these colorful creatures. La Fallas has begun.
During the following week, the fallas are judged. In the end, one is declared the winner. What honor falls on the winner's huge shoulders? It gets the honor of being burned last on the final night of the festival.

OurGreatLoveofChocolate

Is there any other food that is loved as much as chocolate? It is believed that humans have been enjoying chocolate since at least 1900 BC. At that time, chocolate was mainly drunk as a bitter liquid. Mesoamericans, those who lived in an area from central Mexico to parts of Central America, made chocolate using cacao beans. Christopher Columbus and Spanish explorers were responsible for introducing the beans, and therefore chocolate, to Europe.
It took a lot of effort to grow and prepare the beans back then. Because of this, the Europeans originally used slaves to do the work. At first, only the rich could afford chocolate. Later, machines were invented that allowed chocolate to be produced more quickly and cheaply. People’s desire for chocolate soon grew as it became more affordable.

Picnicking goes back a long way. It is mentioned in the writings of the ancient Greeks dating back nearly 2,000 years. The word itself was first mentioned in a French poem from the mid-17th century. Just over a century later, parks in France were opened to the public after the French Revolution. Picnicking in parks became a popular pastime for people from all walks of life.
The word and the custom then traveled over to England in the early 19th century. There, a group of enthusiasts of French culture formed the Pic-Nic Society. Participants drew lots to find out what dish they would have to bring. They would also stage theatrical performances to entertain other people.
These days, picnics are more popular than ever. Every summer in Taipei, there is the TLC Taipei Picnic, where fans of the network can meet with some of their idols. Do not forget to have some fun and enjoy food outside when the weather is warm.
