《中英對照讀新聞》Can You Learn Anything While You Sleep? 睡著時能學東西嗎?

Is sleep learning possible? The answer is yes and no, depending on what we mean by "learning."

Absorbing complex information or picking up a new skill from scratch by, say, listening to an audio recording during sleep is almost certainly impossible. But research shows that the sleeping brain is far from idle and that some forms of learning can happen.

The first study to demonstrate a memory and learning benefit from sleep was published in 1914 by German psychologist Rosa Heine. She found that learning new material in the evening before sleep results in better recall compared to learning during the day.

In recent years, multiple studies have found that a basic form of learning, called conditioning, can happen during sleep. In a 2012 study published in the journal Nature Neuroscience, Israeli researchers found that people can learn to associate sounds with odors during sleep.

Although the memory was implicit, it could affect the people’s behavior, researchers found in a 2014 study published in the Journal of Neuroscience.

《中英對照讀新聞》One in 10 single Koreans say wedding ceremony is a must - 10分之1單身南韓人認為必須舉行婚禮

According to a survey conducted by the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs, out of 2,464 unmarried Koreans asked - 1,140 men and 1,324 women between the ages of 20-44 - those who replied that a wedding ceremony is a must stood at a mere 10 percent.

"Overall, the ratio of (survey respondents) in favor of a wedding stands at about half the people surveyed. But the portion of those who replied that a wedding is a must drops to the 10 percentage range. This is attributable to the growing importance of one’s decision and judgment and less importance placed on formality in marriage," said the institute.

"Such responses were not confined to a certain group, which shows increasing emphasis on personal choice over social norms," said the institute. In Korea, a couple can formalize their marriage by registering a declaration of marriage with the local authorities, with no need for a ceremony.

Roughly half of patients with cancer have symptoms of insomnia, and many may have sleep problems that linger for at least a year, a small study suggests.

Up to 10 percent of adults in the developed world suffer from chronic insomnia, and cancer patients are particularly prone to it, researchers note in Sleep Medicine.

For the study, researchers examined data on 405 cancer patients in Germany who were 59 years old on average and completed two assessments of insomnia severity:once when they joined the study and again twelve months later.

The most common malignancies were breast cancer, tumors of the prostate or testicles, and colorectal cancer. Most patients - 83 percent - were being treated for a first-time cancer. The rest of them had a relapses or secondary tumors in a different location than the original cancer.

At the start of the study, 49 percent of the patients had insomnia symptoms, and 13 percent had severe enough sleep problems to meet the clinical definition of insomnia, the study found. After a year, 64 percent of the patients who started out with insomnia were still suffering from symptoms.

Moscow’s metro system is famed for its Stalin-era stations with glittering chandeliers and mosaics, but architects are taking a radical new approach as the network undergoes a massive expansion.

While the original stations were conceived as "palaces for the people", the new designs are less formal with light boxes for seats and laser-printed glass patterns.

Take the station of Solntsevo for example. Moscow’s Nefa Architects punched holes in the walls of the station entrances to "create light and shadow." Down on the platform, cylindrical white light boxes serve as seats sturdy enough to withstand passengers’ weight. "We wanted to let the sun inside," said Nefa’s lead architect Dmitry Ovcharov.

In 2018, the transport system, which dates back to 1935, opened 16 new stations and carried around two billion passengers per year.(AFP)

宛如現代 Netflix 的魔法燈籠

Magic lanterns were devices that let people watch images on a wall. A lantern would shine light on photo slides to make the pictures appear bigger. Then, everyone in the room could look at the large images. Although the first magic lantern was invented in the 1500s, few people bought them because they were too costly. During the 1800s, brilliant businesspeople came up with an idea. They began renting lanterns to customers for a few days. Families could then afford to use them.

《中英對照讀新聞》About 1 in 4 Japanese adults in their 20s and 30s is a virgin 約4分之1日本人20及30歲時仍在室

Japanese adults have their first heterosexual sexual experiences later than their counterparts in the United States and the UK, according to a new study.

The study found that sexual inexperience was on the rise in Japan, with the percentage of women aged 18 to 39 who’d never had sex rising to 24.6% in 2015 from 21.7% in 1992. The change was greater for men of the same age, with 25.8% virgins in 2015, up from 20% in 1992.

By comparison, surveys from the UK, the United States and Australia suggest that rates of heterosexual inexperience are between 1% to 5% of adults in or around their 30s. The study said Japan appears to be an outlier.

The results are likely to be cause for concern given Japan’s ongoing battle with population decline and a low fertility rate. The issue is important in Japan because it is considered a "super-aged" nation, meaning more than 20% of its population is over 65 years old.

The South Korean government pledged Monday to invest more than 30 trillion won to establish a full-fledged 5G environment by 2022, as the country beat its competitor by a hair to begin commercial services of the hyperspeed network on April 4.

During an event to mark the achievement at the Olympic Park in Seoul, President Moon Jae-in vowed to create $73 billion worth of exports and 600,000 jobs by 2026. To achieve the goal, the government pledged to promote industries such as autonomous driving and digital medical care.

According to the president, the global 5G industry will become a 1,161 trillion won market by 2026, about twice as large as that of semiconductors. To encourage prompt construction of nationwide 5G networks, the government vowed to lower taxes for network construction by up to 3 percent.

《中英對照讀新聞》Transmongolian: the beauty queen breaking barriers-蒙古變性人:打破藩籬的選美皇后

Make-up artist Solongo Batsukh braves Mongolia’s below-freezing temperatures in just a skimpy black dress and light pastel pink coat.

It’s with this typical bluntness, confidence and attitude that taboo-breaking Batsukh strutted into the country’s Miss Universe Mongolia competition.

Batsukh is among the few LGBT people who have dared to come out in Mongolia. She wants to dispel the image that transgender women can only be sex workers or strippers living on the fringes of society.

"I had to reveal myself (as transgender) so I could correct the misunderstandings in society. If we keep hidden, society will keep on hating us. They don’t know us," she said.

She has tough words for Mongolia’s transgender community, too, complaining that they should focus on working rather than just talking about human rights. "Instead of saying ’we’re human like everyone else’, we need to prove ourselves through our actions. Just show others that we’re making a living like ordinary people."(AFP)

Eating mushrooms more than twice a week could prevent memory and language problems occurring in the over-60s, research from Singapore suggests.

A unique antioxidant present in mushrooms could have a protective effect on the brain, the study found. The more mushrooms people ate, the better they performed in tests of thinking and processing speed.

The National University of Singapore study’s findings were based on 663 Chinese adults, aged over 60, whose diet and lifestyle were tracked from 2011 to 2017.

Over the six-year study, the researchers found that eating mushrooms lowered the chances of mild cognitive impairment, so that roughly nine out of 100 people who ate more than two portions(300g)a week were diagnosed, compared with 19 out of 100 among those who ate fewer than one portion.

Mild cognitive impairment can make people forgetful, affect their memory and cause problems with language, attention and locating objects in spaces - but the changes can be subtle. It is not serious enough to be defined as dementia.

《中英對照讀新聞》Jeff Bezos: World’s richest man agrees $35bn divorce 傑夫.貝佐斯:全世界最富有的男人 同意350億美元離婚

The world’s richest man, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, and his wife MacKenzie have agreed a record-breaking divorce settlement of at least $35bn.

Amazon confirmed on Thursday that MacKenzie is expected to hold 4% of the company’s common stock pending a court approval of their divorce decree. Based on Amazon’s current market value, that amount would be worth roughly $35 billion.

Bezos’current net worth is estimated at $114 billion, which is down from $150 billion as a result of the divorce settlement. According to Forbes magazine, the settlement makes MacKenzie the third wealthiest woman in the world.

The couple announced they were splitting up in January, ending a 25-year marriage. The separation turned into a media firestorm after the National Enquirer claimed to have evidence that Bezos had been having an affair with a former news anchor, Lauren Sanchez.

《中英對照讀新聞》Singapore plans S$300m to spur innovation in digital push 新加坡擬投資3億星幣推動數位化創新

Singapore will allocate a further S$300 million (US$222 million) to spur research in digital innovation as the government transforms the economy through technology.

The amount, almost double the current budget, is part of the next phase of the National Research Foundation’s five-year plan ending 2020, Minister for Communications and Information S. Iswaran said during a parliamentary session. It will be used for research in the services and digital economy.

Singapore will roll out artificial-intelligence and cloud-based solutions to every business sector by 2020, Iswaran said. The nation introduced a nationwide electronic invoicing network for businesses in January, and also has an initiative to help businesses securely exchange digital trade documents.

The Infocomm Media Development Authority plans to begin rolling out fifth-generation, or 5G, mobile-phone networks by 2020 to maintain Singapore’s "competitive edge in connectivity," Iswaran said. (Bloomberg)

《中英對照讀新聞》Controversial experiments that could make bird flu more risky poised to resume 恐使禽流感更加危險的爭議性實驗準備恢復進行

Controversial studies that modify bird flu viruses in ways that could make them more risky to humans will soon resume after being on hold for more than 4 years. ScienceInsider has learned that last year, a U.S. government review panel quietly approved experiments proposed by two labs that were previously considered so dangerous that federal officials had imposed an unusual moratorium on such research.

The outcome may not satisfy some scientists who believe certain studies that aim to make pathogens more potent or more likely to spread in mammals are so risky they should be limited or even banned.

One of the investigators leading the studies, however, says he’s happy he can resume his experiments. "We are glad the United States government weighed the risks and benefits … and developed new oversight mechanisms," says Yoshihiro Kawaoka of the University of Wisconsin. The other group that got the green light is led by Ron Fouchier at Erasmus University Medical Center in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

《中英對照讀新聞》 Fake news in Asia 假新聞在亞洲

Several Asian countries rely heavily on social media for information, making them particularly vulnerable to the spread of fake news.

Some governments have started enacting "fake news laws" to tackle the problem but critics worry such legislation will be used to stifle freedom of speech.

In Myanmar, the military has been accused of creating fake accounts on Facebook to spread false news about Muslims in the country, inciting violence against the Rohingya minority.

In Singapore, a parliamentary committee asked in 2018 to consider legislation aiming both to those responsible of fake news and technology companies giving a platform to those voices.
