【拼字原則】

I before e,

Except after c,

Or when sounded as a,

As in neighbor or weigh.

字母i 在 字母e 之前，

除非前面是字母 c，

或者組合起來的讀音像 a，

譬如 neighbor 或 weigh。

 

有許多美國人都以這項規來檢視自己的拼字，大多數的情況下都很適用，譬如 beige、ceiling、conceive、feign、field、inveigh、obeisance、priest、receive、shield、sleigh 與 weight 之類的單字都符合這項規則。當然，這項原則一樣有例外。

 

【每個月有幾天】

Thirty days hath September,

April, June, and November,

All the rest have thirty-one,

Excepting February alone,

To which we twenty-eight assign

Till leap year makes it twenty-nine.

九月有三十天，四月、六月和十一月也一樣，

其餘每月三十一天，

只有二月不一樣，

算算只有二十八天，

遇到閏年才加一天。

 

這段文字雖然押韻，卻不能算是真正的詩，只能算是教小孩子學習一個月有幾天的順口溜。
