A lethal mystery virus originating in the Middle East has caught Taiwan’s attention because of its similarity to the SARS virus. The Centers for Disease Control listed it today as a notifiable disease, but did not feel it is a big a threat as SARS.

This is a new virus. We have to classify it as a communicable disease, as a type 5 notifiable disease.
The new respiratory virus is the first coronavirus found to be lethal since SARS caused a global panic in 2002. Taiwan’s Centers for Disease Control believes, however, that the new virus is not as menacing as SARS.

At this point, there are only two cases in the world, and the two cases did not come into contact with each other.

The new coronavirus is not as contagious. Compared with SARS, which we know about, it’s a little weaker. People and medical workers who have come into contact with it have not gotten sick.
Listing the virus as a notifiable disease means it must be reported to authorities within 24 hours and patients must be put in quarantine. A passenger arriving at the airport from the Middle East and found to have a fever will be required to wear a mask and seek treatment.
日前兩名中東男子感染[新型冠狀病毒]，一名不幸喪命，另一名目前靠著體外維生系統延續生命。由於這種[新冠病毒]症狀和SARS非常類似，發燒、咳嗽、肺炎，還會引發腎衰竭。疾管局今天將它正式列入第五類傳染病。

新型冠狀病毒呼吸道重症是在2002年SARS全球大流行後，第一次發現冠狀病毒引起人類死亡的案件，而且症狀與SARS也相當類似。不過疾管局認為，沒有當年那麼來勢洶洶。

列為法定傳染病後，依規定需要24小時內通報、隔離治療，在機場檢測入境旅客是否發燒，如果發燒並且來自中東，會要求戴上口罩自行就醫。
