A row has emerged over NT$1.7 million in annual subsidies offered to each of the country’s lawmakers. One KMT legislator called for the nine subsidies in question to go, but he was met with a mostly negative response from his colleagues. 

Protesters shouted out. They were furious after KMT Legislator Alex Tsai revealed that there was no legal basis for nine subsidies enjoyed by lawmakers. The reaction put Tsai in a strange position.

After discussing the course of raising this proposal, I want to apologize to my colleagues for the trouble I caused by not discussing the issue with them earlier.

Tsai was conciliatory, but remained committed to his original cause. He wants the nine subsidies eliminated. They include subsidies for overseas inspections, rental of service centers and research. Each lawmaker can use these to claim over NT$1.7 million a year. Just five KMT lawmakers backed Tsai’s proposal. The caucus could only agree on cutting three subsidies: one for accommodation expenses, another for research fees and the third for cell phone purchases. Together these three subsidies amount to NT$336,000 a year.

Tsai still wants to see all nine go, but he has little to no support in his party. The DPP will offer its thoughts on the spending controversy after its party caucus meeting on Wednesday.

蔡正元提出刪除9A津貼的提案，”[[cg in]]包括出國考察費，服務處租金補助費，立法研究補助費等九項，每個立委一年高達172.3萬的津貼，只獲得五個國民黨立委支持，達成共識的只有刪除2A+1，也就是住宿補助費，立法研究費和手機購置費，一年33.6萬的津貼。[[cg out]]

蔡正元鐵了心，堅持9A一個都不留，黨內沒人相挺，乾脆向民進黨喊話，民進黨團星期三，也要召開黨團大會，才會做出決定。
