Dispersing the crowds who came to watch the concerts and fireworks outside Taipei 101 proved to be a difficult challenge for metro operators. By the end of 24 consecutive hours of service on New Year’s morning, ridership on the city’s MRT system had surpassed 2 million.

The fireworks show at Taipei 101 had yet to conclude when a rush of people descended on the Taipei Metro.

People outside Taipei City Hall Station wanted to get a train home but were stuck outside. To calm anxious customers, the transit operators formed crowd control ambassadors. Some performed the “Gangnam Style” dance.

It helped, but most New Year’s revelers just wanted to get home.

“Everyone is rushing and crowding in,” says this metro rider. “It’s a bit disorderly.”

A record 850,000 people joined the city government’s New Year’s festivities. The Taipei Rapid Transit Corporation estimates that over the 24 hours up to 6 am Jan. 1, ridership was more than 2.06 million, another record. To deal with crowds the MRT stayed open 42 hours straight and added extra trains, but it still wasn’t enough to stop the inevitable jams.
