Expert calls for comprehensive rabies survey (2013/07/24)

A doctor at National Taiwan University Veterinary Hospital is urging a comprehensive rabies survey. Rabies fears are increasing following the discovery of four infected Formosan ferret-badgers, one of which bit a man in Taitung.

The Bureau of Animal Quarantine and the Centers for Disease Control held an emergency news conference Tuesday evening. CDC Deputy Director-General Chou Jih-haw announced Taiwan’s first instance of a rabid Formosan ferret-badger biting a person.

This patient is a male in his 30s from Taitung, says Chou. He was bitten on his left index finger yesterday (Monday) evening by a wild animal.

After being bitten, the man quickly went to hospital to receive the rabies immunoglobulin and vaccine. He is under observation.

Last month the Council of Agriculture found three dead ferret-badgers infected with rabies, in Nantou’s Xitou and Yuchih as well as Yunlin’s Gukeng. The discovery of another infected animal in Taitung has increased fears that the disease is widespread.

I think two steps are needed, says Veterinarian Chi C. H. First, we need a comprehensive survey of all low elevation mountainous areas in Taiwan to see if any other carnivorous wild animals are infected with rabies. Second, we need to vaccinate pets and people who may come into contact with these wild animals, particularly those in low elevation mountainous areas.

The incubation period for rabies generally lasts 20 days to three months. Those who fall ill develop a fever, become tired and have trouble breathing. Nearly 100 percent die. But most people who are treated shortly after being bitten survive.
