Reform to continue in Japan after ruling party win upper house polls (2013/07/22)

Victory in upper house elections has consolidated Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s power. The ruling coalition now controls both chambers of parliament, paving the way for Abe to continue implementing his landmark economic reforms.

Shinzo Abe, leader of the Liberal Democratic Party, is now the first prime minister of Japan with control over the upper and lower houses of parliament in six years.

I feel that this is the beginning. What is most important for the people is that they will begin to experience an improving economy.

Abe promised to increase the pace of his economic policies and meet voters’ expectations. He also had a message for Beijing regarding the Tiaoyutai Islands sovereignty dispute.

I think that (Japan and China) should hold a leaders’ summit to discuss this diplomatic issue. It is like I just said: The door for dialogue is wide open.

The Liberal Democratic Party won 65 seats in the upper house polls, which took place Sunday. The main opposition party, the Democratic Party of Japan, took just 17 seats, its worst showing since the party’s formation.

When the celebration ends Abe will have a number of issues to tackle, include adjusting the sales tax, relations with Beijing and Seoul, and the Trans-Pacific Partnership.
