President Ma and Premier Jiang Yi-huah have been reluctant to expel protesters occupying the Legislature, but they showed no such qualms about removing students from the Executive Yuan. Today they defended anti-riot measures that left more than 100 people injured. They placed blame for this bloody outcome on the students and other demonstrators who they accuse of “illegally” occupying government buildings.

Motorcades brought President Ma Ying-jeou and Premier Jiang Yi-huah to the Presidential Office this morning. The pair held a meeting to discuss the government’s response to the student-led protests. In it, the president supported Jiang’s decision to expel demonstrators who had entered the Executive Yuan. Jiang later commented on the storming of the Executive Yuan by the demonstrators.

Jiang Yi-huah
Premier
This was a premeditated act. This kind of behavior turned a movement that originally promoted peace and non-violence into one that violently attacked a government agency. This mass movement intended to occupy the same government agency and paralyze the national government. We deeply regret and are pained by these actions.

Some people have compared the government response to the 1989 Tiananmen Square Massacre in China. Jiang dismissed the connection.

Jiang Yi-huah
Premier
We feel that this type of statement is a gross distortion of reality. These demonstrators forcefully entered the Executive Yuan and planned to ruin administrative function. If, at this moment, we did not exercise our official authority, we would be letting down the people.

Jiang was asked whether debates could take place to ease concerns over the trade-in-services pact. He replied that neither the president nor the Cabinet had ever ruled out such a possibility.
