Businesses and consumers brace for higher electricity and gas rates in October (2013/08/19)

Businesses and the general public are bracing for a series of price hikes in October, affecting items ranging from electricity to rail tickets. There are concerns that the higher cost of goods will pose a serious threat to Taiwan’s sluggish economy.

Hearing the phrase “rate hike” is enough to give many people a headache. Beginning in October, rate hikes in eight areas affecting consumers are slated. Among these, electricity rates may cause the greatest pain as Taipower warns the average rate increase could be over 10 percent.

The Ministry of Transportation also notes that beginning on Oct. 1, tickets on the Taiwan High Speed Rail will see an average increase of 9 percent. Taiwan Railways could adjust fares in the first half of next year. All of these planned rate increases have led industry and commercial leaders to speak out.

Lawrence Chang
Taiwan Chamber of Commerce
Our economic situation is not very good. If electricity rates increase, it could lead to other price increases. Therefore, I recommend the government temporarily suspend its plan.

Rock Hsu
Chinese National Federation of Industries
Textiles, the steel industry and petrochemicals will all encounter heavy burdens. These companies may suddenly need to spend tens of billions of extra NT$.

A quick comparison of domestic economic growth and price trends indicates the government had once guaranteed GDP growth of 4 percent, later reducing the figure to 2 percent, with the consumer price index seeing a very small increase. The government’s official accounting and statistics bureau now conservatively estimates that higher electricity rates will drag down economic growth by two-tenths of a percentage point this year and increase the consumer price index by six-hundredths of a percentage point.
