Dutch police have finally cracked the case of a petrol station robbery nearly a decade on after the thief handed himself in, apparently wracked by a guilty conscience.

The cold case dates back to January 18, 2016. A robber stole a few hundred euros from a petrol station in the southern Dutch town of Terneuzen.

The cashier was able to give a detailed description of the thief and police opened an investigation, but could not find their man and the case remained unsolved.

"A 28-year-old man who now lives in Arnhem probably had a guilty conscience and recently handed himself in to police in his hometown," authorities said.

A census of brown bears using DNA for the first time has revealed that up to 13,000 of the protected species are living in Romania, much more than the 8,000 previously estimated, the government announced on Thursday.

Estonia’s president on Wednesday signed into law a constitutional amendment banning non-EU citizens from taking part in local elections, a move targeting the large Russian minority in the Baltic state.

The Shuntian Chemical Group, based in China’s Shandong province, told its 1,200 employees in January that any unmarried workers aged between 28 and 58, including those who are divorced, were required to "resolve your personal marriage issues" by 30 September.

A large elephant seal took a wrong turn and was seen lumbering along a street in a coastal town in South Africa early Tuesday, surprising residents and inspiring a rescue effort to get him back to sea.

Authorities in the second-largest city in Kyrgyzstan, Osh, have removed a towering statue of Vladimir Lenin thought to be the tallest of the revolutionary Soviet leader in Central Asia.
