The hardest thing for a guide dog is to focus and not get distracted while working. After all, dogs love to sniff out all the smells around them and chase other animals. Guide dogs are not even allowed to bark while they are working. That is why potential guide dogs start their training when they are 18 months old. They are first put through a four-month course with a sighted instructor. If the dogs pass this phase, they are teamed up with a blind person for about another month before they are totally qualified.

對導盲犬來說，最困難的事就在於工作時要專注，而且注意力不能被分散。畢竟狗兒喜歡去聞牠們周遭的所有味道以及追逐其它動物。工作中的導盲犬甚至不被允許吠叫。這也是為何有機會成為導盲犬的狗兒在十八個月大時就要開始接受訓練。首先牠們會與一位明眼的指導員共同進行為期四個月的課程。如果狗狗通過了這個階段，在牠們完全合格以前，牠們還會跟一位盲人配對合作約一個月左右的時間。
