This holiday season, many Russians are tightening their belts.
這個節日期間，許多俄羅斯人正勒緊褲帶。
Russians traditionally increase their spending in the final few weeks of each year, gearing up for New Year celebrations and nationwide holidays in the first weeks of January.

But stubborn inflation has driven up prices of staples such as butter, potatoes and chicken in recent months, hitting Russia’s poorest and causing some to cut back this festive season.

Crocodiles, monkeys, tigers, zebras and dozens of other taxidermy animals will move to new homes after concerns about arsenic exposure forced the closure of the South Dakota museum where they had been displayed for decades.

Japan wants renewables to be its top power source by 2040 in a push to reduce dependence on coal and gas, government plans showed Tuesday.
週二公布的政府計畫顯示，日本致力推動減少對煤炭和天然氣的依賴，希望在2040年前讓再生能源成為該國最大電力來源。
The government had already said it wants the world’s fourth-largest economy to be carbon-neutral by 2050.

Under the new plans, renewables such as solar and wind are expected to account for 40 to 50 percent of electricity generation by 2040.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. is considering taking a controlling stake in Intel Corp.’s factories at the request of Trump administration officials, a person familiar with the matter said.

Trump officials raised the idea of a deal between the two companies in recent meetings with the Taiwanese chipmaker, the person said, and TSMC was receptive.

Googly eyes have been appearing on sculptures around the central Oregon city of Bend, delighting many residents and sparking a viral sensation covered widely by news outlets.

On social media, the city shared photos of googly eyes on installations in the middle of roundabouts that make up its so-called “Roundabout Art Route.”

Over the years, the city’s sculptures have been adorned with other seasonal decorations. The city doesn’t remove those, and views the googly eyes differently because of the adhesive, Bend’s communications director, Rene Mitchell, told The Associated Press.

Four days after the theft that law enforcement say could be tied to the sky-high cost of eggs, no leads have come in, Trooper First Class Megan Frazer, a spokesperson for the Pennsylvania State Police, said Wednesday.

A police officer who shocked a 95-year-old nursing home resident with a Taser was found guilty of manslaughter in an Australian court Wednesday.
用電擊槍電擊一位95歲養老院居民的一名警官，週三在澳洲法院被判過失殺人罪成立。
A jury found Kristian James Samuel White guilty after 20 hours of deliberation.

Clare Nowland, a great-grandmother who had dementia and used a walker, was refusing to put down the steak knife she was holding when the officer discharged his Taser at her in May 2023. Nowland fell backward after White shocked her and died a week later in hospital.
