Professor Lin Chieh-liang died at 12:42 on Aug. 5 at the age of 55. There were no vital signs and the family wished he could avoid suffering, so it decided not to continue use of life support equipment.

Lin’s health deteriorated suddenly. Last Friday morning he felt dizzy along with labored breathing and was taken to the emergency room at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. He was fully conscious, and the hospital diagnosed him with a severe case of fluid in the lungs. He was sent immediately for kidney dialysis, though his situation deteriorated quickly. By three in the afternoon he was put on a machine to help with artificial respiration and soon slipped into a coma. On Monday, he experienced septic shock, leading to multiple organ failure. He was ultimately pronounced dead this afternoon

As for the cause of death, the hospital speculated it may have been a viral infection because it could not find the source of a potential bacterial infection.

Lin’s son took to Facebook to post the sad news of his father’s passing.

Upon hearing the news, many came to Chang Gung Memorial Hospital to offer their wishes on a special wall. They were moved to tears after learning of Lin’s passing. The hospital has pledged to create a research fund in his name, allowing his public health advocacy to continue.
