The Legislative Yuan passed an amendment yesterday to bar people with sex offenses record from teaching at schools and other educational institutions.
The revised act to the Teachers’ Act disqualifies people convicted of sex abuse, those who fail to report on-campus sex crimes to the relevant authorities and thus allow a recurrence of such offenses, and those who attempt to cover up sex crimes committed by others in schools.
Incumbent teachers found guilty of such offenses should be sacked immediately, the amended law mandates.
Education authorities and school officials are required to gather and check information on campus sex crimes and report to the relevant supervisory body, the bill states.
Legislator Tien Chiu-chin of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party said the revisions addressed the loopholes in the existing act, which exempts school principals and officials from culpability in cases where there is a cover up of sex crimes perpetrated by teachers.
“The revised act serves as a reminder to education officials and teachers that they will lose their jobs forever if they fail to report on-campus sex offenses honestly,” she said.
