Picnicking goes back a long way. It is mentioned in the writings of the ancient Greeks dating back nearly 2,000 years. The word itself was first mentioned in a French poem from the mid-17th century. Just over a century later, parks in France were opened to the public after the French Revolution. Picnicking in parks became a popular pastime for people from all walks of life.
The word and the custom then traveled over to England in the early 19th century. There, a group of enthusiasts of French culture formed the Pic-Nic Society. Participants drew lots to find out what dish they would have to bring. They would also stage theatrical performances to entertain other people.
These days, picnics are more popular than ever. Every summer in Taipei, there is the TLC Taipei Picnic, where fans of the network can meet with some of their idols. Do not forget to have some fun and enjoy food outside when the weather is warm.
