Journalists are supposed to be able to describe scenes so well with words that it feels like the people reading the articles are seeing the events in real time. Photojournalists, on the other hand, are visual storytellers. They photograph, edit, and present images in ways that tell stories. Some photojournalists work for smaller newspapers or magazines and cover local stories of interest. Others work for themselves as freelancers in dangerous parts of the world and sell their photos to various global news organizations.

新聞記者必須要能夠用文字清楚描述事件，使閱讀文章的人們彷彿親眼看見事發現場一般。另一方面，攝影記者是視覺的故事敘說者。他們拍照、編輯、展示會說故事的圖像。有些攝影記者在比較小型的報社或雜誌社工作，他們報導當地關注的新聞。其他的攝影記者在世界上的危險地區當自由工作者，他們把他們的照片賣給眾多的全球新聞機構。
