何謂可數名詞？

如果你是個學生，正坐在教室內，環顧四周，你一定可以指出許多具有實體的物品：

desks, chairs, flag, clock, computers, keyboards, projector, books, bookcases, pens, notebooks, backpacks, lights, students

現在你再指出一些屬於教室本身一部份的東西：

floor, wall, ceiling, windows, door, chalkboard

你可以想像迄今你所指出的每樣東西如果超過一項時是長得什麼樣子 -- 雖然你要有一間以上的教室才能有一個以上的地板或天花板。這些都是可數名詞 -- 你可以計數的東西。

用法：

  • 可數名詞可以複數化。
  • 我們可以使用如下的詞句：
    a.  many bottles
    b.  few bottles
    c.  a few bottles
  • 這些名詞 (單數和複數) 的前面可以加適當的定冠詞和不定冠詞 -- the 加在單數與複數可數名詞前面，而 a 或 an 加在單數可數名詞前面。
  • 單數可數名詞的前面可以加 this 和 that 以及 every, each, either 和 neither。
  • 複數可數名詞的前面可以加 these 和 those 以及 some, any, enough 和零冠詞。
  • 可數名詞前面不可加 much。

何謂物質名詞 (不可數名詞)？

這裡我們列出一個物質名詞表來讓你思考。你能計算這些東西的數目? 我們在平常的講話和寫作中曾經使用過這些字當中任何一個的複數型? 表中第一欄的東西有什麼共同點? 那第二欄? 在上面有關教室物品的敘述中，我們指出教室內可以計數的東西。同一間教室內有那些東西是我們無法計數的?

用法：

  • 不可數名詞的類別：上表第一欄的東西是材料和物質，第二欄為食物；這些欄目的類別包括金屬、氣體、液體和固體。在第三和第四欄中，我們明顯見到以活動 (activities) 類別為主，包括運動、語言、學科、自然事件以及由多個物件組合而成的東西 (如設備、行李和家具)。
  • 一般而言，這些名詞不能被複數化。第二欄的不可數名詞 (食物) 在表達「種類」(type) 時可以複數化：
    a.  There are new wines being introduced every day. 
    b.  The waters of the Atlantic are much warmer this time of year. 
    c.  The Dutch are famous for their cheeses.
    d.  The spring rains came early.
  • 我們可以使用如下的詞句：
    a.  much harm
    b.  little harm
    c.  a little harm
  • 這些名詞的前面可以加定冠詞或不定冠詞：
    a.  the sunshine
    b.  an experience
    c.  a wine
    但它們通常是零冠詞：
    a.  Smoking is bad for you.
    b.  Poetry is beautiful.
    c.  Sugar is sweet.
    d.  Experience is the best teacher.
  • 這些名詞的前面可以加 some, any, enough, this, that 和 much。
  • 由於這些名詞不可數，它們的前面不能加 these, those, every, each, either 和 neither。
