Independence advocate, Chai Trong-rong, passes away at the age of 78 (2014/01/12)

Former legislator and independence advocate, Chai Trong-rong passed away early Saturday morning. His work was praised by many across all political parties as well as those from abroad. Chai will be remembered for his lifelong love and advocacy on the behalf of Taiwan.

The passing of former legislator Chai Trong-rong was mourned by family members as well as pan-green and pan-blue politicians who offered condolences to his family.

Wang Jin-pyng
Legislative Speaker
(Chai Trong-rong ) was resolute, and if things didn’t meet his objective, he was never willing to give up. If he wanted a bill passed, he would find a way to pass it. All of his bills benefited the country, the society, and the citizens, so I have great admiration for him.

Lo Fu-chen
Former Taiwan Representative to Japan
He didn’t live an extravagant life but he was always willing to work for Taiwan, and I can say that he was one of the most important friends in my life.

In addition to working as a legislator in Taiwan, Chai had numerous friends abroad including Steven Chabot, Chair of the House Subcommittee on Asia and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen former Chairwoman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Both of these US politicians expressed their condolences and praised Chai’s commitment to Taiwan’s democratic struggle.

Born in 1935 in Chiayi, Chai was committed to promoting changes to Taiwan’s Referendum Act along with Taiwan independence. After graduating from National Taiwan University’s College of Law, he went to study overseas in the US, and served as the founding chairman of the Formosan Association for Public Affairs and successfully lobbied the U.S. Congress to secure a quota of 20,000 immigrants from Taiwan to the US each year.

After returning to Taiwan in 1990, he founded the Association for a Plebiscite with the goal of promoting referendums to allow citizens the right to self-determination. He would later become a 5-term legislator, and serve as the acting chair of the DPP. In his 19 years in domestic politics, his lone preoccupation and concern was the future of Taiwan.
