「哈利波特」這部小說風靡全球，很多書迷在小說出版當日一早到書店排隊購買，像這樣非常暢銷的書籍，英文可以形容為：This book is selling like hot cakes. (這本書像熱蛋糕一樣好賣)，受歡迎的熱蛋糕一出爐便賣光，所以，selling like hot cakes比喻為非常熱賣、非常暢銷的意思，其他說法有：It’s selling fast / moving fast.（賣得很快）、It’s very popular.（它十分受歡迎）、It’s a best-seller.（它是最好賣的）。

Katherine:Great! People are snapping it up. This book is selling like hot cakes.

《暢銷》
凱思蓮談到一本暢銷書：People are snapping it up. This book is selling like hot cakes。
餅店麵包、蛋糕新鮮出爐時，香聞鄰里，路過者雙腿往往就不由自主往店裡走。所以，to sell / go like hot cakes有「非常暢銷」的意思，例如：It was a terribly cold winter, and electric heaters sold like hot cakes（那個冬天非常寒冷，電暖爐十分暢銷 )。留意美式英文常把hot cakes合為一字：to sell like hotcakes。合成一字的hotcakes，指薄煎餅 ( pancakes )，分為兩字的hot cakes則指熱蛋糕。
多人購買的貨品，也可以稱為fast-moving goods。英文有一個簡寫FMCG，即fast-moving consumer goods（銷售迅速的消費品 )，指食物、飲料、清潔劑等日常消費品。The company deals chiefly in FMCG即「這家公司主要是賣日常消費品」。
說貨物暢銷，還可用well received / popular（受歡迎的 )、in demand（有需求的 )、best-selling（暢銷的）等字，例如：This new line in refrigerators is very well received（或is very much in demand）（這種新款冰箱很暢銷）。不過，best-selling可不能用於上述例句，它習慣用於名詞之前，例如a best-selling author / book（暢銷書作者 / 暢銷書 )。Best-seller一般也是指暢銷書。
「搶購」英文是snap up，取snap「一下子咬住」的意思。His books, though poorly written, were all snapped up after he won the Nobel Prize即「他的書雖然寫得不好，但他贏得諾貝爾獎之後，就被搶購一空」。
