Like many souvenir stores in New York City, Memories of New York in Manhattan is packed with shirts. They bear the logos of the Yankees and select subway lines, images of the Brooklyn Bridge and, of course, the familiar "I ❤️NY" insignia that is a staple of city souvenir shops.

The store’s owner, Alper Tutus, said shirt sales are vital to his business. But since he reopened in August after closing in March because of the city’s coronavirus lockdown, he hasn’t sold a single one.

For many tourists, no visit to New York is complete without a stop to pick up a T-shirt, cap or any other piece of memorabilia that celebrates the bustling, thriving global destination that the city is — or was, before the pandemic led to travel restrictions.

A Michigan couple whose large family attracted attention by growing to include 14 sons has welcomed their first daughter, Maggie Jayne, nearly three decades after the birth of their first child.

Jay Schwandt said he and his wife, both 45, "are overjoyed and ecstatic to add Maggie Jayne to our family."

The Schwandts have been featured for years in local and national news as their family has grown. The couple have a livestreaming program called "14 Outdoorsmen" that may now need a name change.

The oldest child Tyler, 28, said his parents thought they would never have a daughter after 14 sons. He said there’s likely nothing pink in the family’s home in the rural community of Lakeview. (AP)

More than 3,000 scientists called for a far bigger global push to protect people and nature from the effects of a heating planet.

In a statement, the scientists - including five Nobel laureates - warned that a failure to respond to rising climate risks, as governments try to revive their economies from coronavirus woes, would have severe consequences, especially for the poorest.

"Building resilience to climate impacts is not a nice-to-have... it is a must if we are to live in a sustainable and secure world," said former U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. (Thomson Reuters Foundation)

A man in his 30s with no underlying health conditions was offered a Covid vaccine after an NHS error mistakenly listed him as just 6.2cm in height.

Liam Thorp was told he qualified for the jab because his measurements gave him a body mass index of 28,000.

He told BBC : "I’ve put on a few pounds in lockdown but I was surprised to have made it to clinically, morbidly-obese."

It was only when he received a call back the following day that the mix-up became clear.

Rather than being listed at 6ft 2ins in height, he was registered as 6.2cm, which led to the error in his BMI.

As Japan gears up for a COVID-19 vaccination drive, a cartoon dog chatbot is doing its bit to reassure a vaccine-skeptical population and answer any questions they might have.

The dog, a Shiba-inu known as Corowa-kun - from the Japanese words for "coronavirus" and "vaccine" - wears a white doctor’s coat and the app named for him gives automated answers to medical questions.

Trust in vaccines in Japan is among the lowest in the world, a study by the Lancet medical journal showed. Only half the population want to take a COVID-19 vaccine, a poll by national broadcaster NHK found last month.(REUTERS)
