迦梨陀娑 是知名梵文劇作家和詩人，生年不詳，估計在西元前五世紀左右，他在梵文文學的地位有如莎士比亞在英文文學的地位，1789 年英國梵文專家威廉·瓊斯率先將他的《沙恭達羅》譯成英文出版。
