Mystical Mountains of North Korea (2013/07/18)

Over the past several years North Korea has promoted Mt. Kumgang to South Korean tourists while offering Chinese special itineraries that include Mt. Chilbo. But for Taiwan and the rest of the world, these mountains remain shrouded in mystery. On a recent trip to North Korea, FTV was given a chance to visit Mt. Chilbo. Tourist authorities brought our reporting team to areas off the beaten path, astonishing for both their ruggedness and beauty.

Towering over the south of North Korea is Mt. Kumgang. Further up along the eastern seaboard in North Hamyong Province is another mountain whose impressive scenery has led it to be called the Mt. Kumgang of the north. Mt. Chilbo, a sprawling expanse of basalt rock, covers 250 square kilometers and is divided into Inner, Outer and Sea regions. Like the rest of the northeast coast development began late, though progress has gathered pace under Kim Jong-un.

“Chilbo” means seven treasures, in reference to a legend of seven forgotten gems concealed there. Less foggy are records of the more than 30 types of animals and 800 types of plants which inhabit the mountain. This vast vista can be savored at a popular stopping point found after traveling from Outer Chilbo to Sea Chilbo.

While ascending Mt. Chilbo visitors gain an excellent vantage from this pavilion. Clouds and mist surround us. To the east is the East Sea, and when the weather is good we can even see Japan.

The pavilion is an ideal place to watch the sunrise. Gazing downward, the morning mist creates the illusion of being in a poem.

Just two minutes drive from the pavilion is another famed landmark with a peculiar shape.

This is fairies landing, in reference to fairies who descended from the skies. They chose to land here after being attracted by the beauty of the sea and the mountain peaks when viewed from heaven.

Mt. Chilbo boasts an impressive range of rocks. In this area, fantastic boulders shaped like animals show how geology and nature can resemble one another.

We call this place “Manmulsang” because it is a diverse landscape with many rocks, plants and animals.

Mt. Chilbo Travel Guide
The second peak is named after what appears to be a thousand Buddhist figures gathered on top. It’s 659 meters high and the main peak of Mt. Chilbo.

Chilbo’s fame comes not from its height, but from the spirits said to inhabit the mountain. It is also home to Kaesimsa Temple, founded in the year 826 and dedicated to Siddhattha Gotama. As Chilbo opened to tourism, knowledge of this temple spread.

Buddhist Master
Guests who visit Kaesimsa Temple on Mt. Chilbo leave with a feeling of great benevolence. In the future, everything will happen according to their wishes. (How many years have you been a monk?) 10 years. (What kind of training was involved in becoming a monk?) There is a process. In our republic, few monks come from the north.

In North Korea, Buddhist monks receive a public salary. They can enjoy the company of their family living nearby as they preserve national heritage by burning incense and asking favors of the gods. They also accept donations. A significant majority of North Korea’s 24 million people adhere to the Juche Idea founded by Kim Il-sung. Because only about 30,000 are Buddhists, the famed Kaesimsa Temple is of greatest allure to foreign believers.

In April 2012, to target Chinese tourists North Korea opened a special train that begins in Jilin Province’s Yanji City. It crosses over the Tumen River, entering North Korea in Namyang, then passing through Chongjin and Kyongsong before arriving at Mt. Chilbo.

To encourage more Taiwanese tourists to visit, on our trip North Korean officials opened areas typically closed to foreigners. We went where there were few traces of people, our path blocked by landslides and bushes. Rugged conditions added a dose of excitement to our Mt. Chilbo journey.

This is FTV’s Anne Hu, Johnson Lee and Hsiao Wei-ren, with an exclusive report from North Korea.
