Just over half of young adult Americans live with their parents, an unprecedented proportion that is doubtless linked to the coronavirus but also reflects a deeper trend, researchers said Friday.

Between February and May, the share of 18-29 year-olds living with at least one parent rose from 47 percent to 52 percent and stayed at that level through July.

The rise was most marked among 18-24 year-olds, with 71 percent of them living with their parents in July, up from 63 percent in February.

Among ethnic groups, the breakdown showed that the trend was strongest inside the Hispanic community.

Even though the increase was pushed by the pandemic as young adults struggled to get by, it is part of a longer-term pattern, Pew says. (AFP)

The Danish toymaker is investing £310m in efforts to create its colourful bricks using sustainable materials, but its quest to find an alternative to oil-based plastic has been quite difficult so far.

For five years, a team of more than 150 engineers and scientists have been testing many different plant-based and recycled materials - but making sure the bricks can stick together while coming apart easily has been a challenge.

Lego executive Tim Brooks said the company has been testing how to use bio-polyethylene, a type of plastic made from ethanol that’s produced using sugarcane, for its hard bricks.

Lego has also announced that it’s going to ditch plastic bags in its boxed sets, which are currently used to hold loose bricks.

The Covid-19 pandemic has been stressful in so many ways that it can be hard to tease apart the strands of what’s getting us down or freaking us out. But amidst the health concerns, family worries, and social distancing strangeness, increased work stress certainly stands out as a widespread consequence of the pandemic.

In this environment, a new study titled "This job is (literally) killing me" seems particularly timely.

The study, by researchers at Northern Illinois University and Indiana University, used data collected over a 20-year period to find out whether there is a link between how we feel at work and when we die.

Analyzing that data, the current study found that those with high-stress, low-control jobs were 43% more likely to die than those in lower-risk categories.

Richmond, Virginia, can continue removing city-owned Confederate memorials, the state Supreme Court ruled this week.

Following protests for racial equality in the wake of George Floyd’s death earlier this summer, Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney invoked his emergency powers to remove multiple Confederate monuments in Richmond, the former capital of the Confederacy, including a statue honoring Confederate Gen. Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, from the city’s historic Monument Avenue.

"As the capital city of Virginia, we have needed to turn this page for decades. And today, we will," Stoney said at the time.

But his actions were soon challenged by a citizen, referred to anonymously in court documents, who said Stoney was acting outside his authority, and a lower court put Stoney’s action on hold to permit the citizen to weigh in on the case.

As more Americans turn to surgery to lose weight, more of them are also returning for a second operation because the first isn’t working.

Last year, an estimated 15% of the 252,000 obesity surgeries in the U.S. came after a previous surgery. That compares to 6% of the 158,000 surgeries in 2011, according to a surgeons’ group.

Weight loss surgery has proven to be an effective way to treat obesity and related conditions like diabetes. Methods vary, but the operations generally shrink the stomach to limit how much people can eat without feeling sick.

Many people achieve significant weight loss but results aren’t assured. It’s still possible to overeat and regain weight over time once restrictive devices slip and stomachs stretch back out.(AP)
