France has long been seen as something of a paradise when it comes to labour rights, with it’s 35-hour week, long lunches and generous holidays.

Now, a new legally-binding agreement effectively banning workers from after-hours work emails could be the icing on the gateau.

The deal signed between employers’ federations and unions representing workers in the digital and consultancy fields stipulates that employees should switch off work emails after 6pm and employers must not pressure them to be electronically available after this time.

Employees will no longer check their work-related email before 9 a.m. or after 6 p.m., according to the agreement. The deal upholds the spirit of the 35-hour work week that France implemented in 1999.

1 million employees in the tech and consulting sectors will be covered by the new rule, the Guardian reports, including workers at the French offices of Google and Facebook.

Stolen paintings by Paul Gauguin and Pierre Bonnard hung on an Italian factory worker’s kitchen wall for almost 40 years, police have revealed.

Now worth at least 10.6m euros, they were stolen from a collector’s London home in 1970 and left on a train in Italy.

At a lost-property auction in 1975, the unsuspecting Fiat worker paid 45,000 Italian lire (23 euros) for them.

He hung them in his Turin home before taking them to Sicily when he retired.

The worker only grew suspicious about their origins when his son saw another Gauguin in a book and noticed similarities with the painting in his father’s kitchen.

North Korea failed to see the joke when a London hair salon used a picture of its leader Kim Jong Un to try to attract more customers and has written to Britain’s Foreign Office asking it to stop what it calls a "provocation".

A hair salon in west London put up a giant poster of the North Korean leader in its window after reading media reports that men in the Asian state had been ordered to have the same hairdo. The promotional poster read: "Bad Hair Day? 15 percent off all gent cuts through the month of April."

With its shaved sides and bowl-like shape, Kim Jong Un’s distinctive haircut has been a light-hearted talking point for North Korea watchers.

But officials at the country’s embassy, which is just a short walk away from the salon, visited to complain and wrote to the Foreign Office asking it to take "necessary action" to stop "the provocation," a British diplomatic source said. The source said the Foreign Office was considering its response.

The embassy filed a complaint to the police too. A spokeswoman for London’s Metropolitan police said on Wednesday that the complaint had been investigated and that no action would be taken. "We spoke to all parties involved and there were no offences," she said. (Reuters)

Sleep loss may be more serious than previously thought, causing a permanent loss of brain cells, research suggests.

In mice, prolonged lack of sleep led to 25% of certain brain cells dying, according to a study in The Journal of Neuroscience.

If the same is true in humans, it may be futile to try to catch up on missed sleep, say US scientists.

They think it may one day be possible to develop a drug to protect the brain from the side-effects of lost sleep.

The study looked at lab mice that were kept awake to replicate the kind of sleep loss common in modern life, through night shifts or long hours in the office.

A Pittsburgh lawyer’s online ad showing smiling robbers, drug dealers and prostitutes flashing thumbs up and thanking him for getting them off the hook has garnered tens of thousands of views and drawn fire from a local bar association.

One fictional criminal pauses while climbing out a window, carrying a laptop to say "Thanks Dan," to the camera, while a pair of men carrying handguns offer a similar message before pulling ski masks over their faces in the three-minute, 27-second ad posted on YouTube by criminal defense attorney Daniel Muessig.

Muessig, a 2012 University of Pittsburgh Law School graduate, then makes his own pitch:"Trust me, I may have a law degree, but I think like a criminal."

The spot has been viewed more than 80,000 times since Muessig posted it on Thursday, and the 32-year-old attorney said he believed the tongue-in-cheek approach would appeal to possible clients.(Reuters)
