As workers pressed for time turn to convenience stores for meals, some sellers of the cheap Taiwanese mainstays known as “lunchboxes” are losing business. We spoke with one vendor in Taipei who is trying to beat the competition by selling a healthy roadside lunchbox.
This seller of Thai-style lunchboxes uses his voice to attract lunchtime customers.
He introduces the ingredients. Between the five-grained rice and three vegetable dishes, the box is jam-packed. Every day he changes the dishes to make sure customers don’t get bored. Still, he is finding it difficult to compete with convenience stores and the microwaveable lunches they sell.
Lunchbox Vendor
Of course this has an effect on business. I’d say the impact is about 10 or 20 percent.
The vendor stations himself roadside at times when workers are on meal breaks. Customers can quickly buy food that is prepared fresh daily.
“I’m sick of (convenience store) meals. Their food is all the same, and of course this is fresher.”
“I usually would go to a more hygienic store with freshly prepared meals.”
Not all customers are open to the roadside lunchboxes. But, faced with competition from convenience stores, this vendor has created a healthy, organic product that can still sell.
