Space tourism company Virgin Galactic on Monday announced a partnership with engine-maker Rolls-Royce to build a supersonic commercial airplane that flies at three times the speed of sound.

"We are excited to unveil this initial design concept of a high speed aircraft, which we envision as blending safe and reliable commercial travel with an unrivalled customer experience," said George Whitesides, chief space officer at Virgin Galactic.

The aircraft’s draft design showed a plane with a triangular "delta wing" carrying between nine and 19 passengers at an altitude of more than 18,000 meters - about twice as high as normal commercial flight.

Virgin Galactic said its team would "work to address key challenges in thermal management, maintenance, noise, emissions, and economics that routine high speed commercial flights would entail."

Cambridge University researchers have developed a ”no-touch touchscreen” that uses artificial intelligence to predict a user’s intention before their hand reaches the display.

The screen was originally designed for use in cars, but the engineers who built it claim it could also have widespread applications during a pandemic.

The "predictive touch" technology can be retrofitted to existing displays and could be used to prevent the spread of pathogens on touchscreens at supermarket check-outs, ATMs and ticket terminals at railway stations.

The technology works by predicting where a user intends to touch the screen as they begin the hand movement towards the screen. A combination of AI and sensors determine the user’s intent in real time by also tracking contextual information like the user’s profile, environmental conditions and an eye-gaze tracker.

New research published Wednesday shows that humans can tell when a chimpanzee is happy, sad, angry or scared - simply by listening to their cries.

"We demonstrate for the first time that humans can accurately map other species vocalisations to specific behavioural contexts," Roza Kamiloglu, a researcher at the University of Amsterdam and lead study author, told AFP.

Kamiloglu and the team asked close to 3,500 participants to listen to recordings of 150 chimp sounds, then decide based on what they heard if the animal was in a positive or negative situation, and whether it was excited or relaxed.

Around 300 participants were then asked to match sounds to a list of 10 behaviours, including chimps mating, being separated from their mothers, or being scared by something.

The humans proved surprising adept at understanding the correct context in which the cries were recorded.

Researchers say they’ve mimicked the voice of a 3,000-year-old Egyptian mummy by recreating much of its vocal tract using medical scanners, 3D printing and an electronic larynx.

In a paper published by the journal Scientific Reports, the authors say the technique allowed them to produce a single sound - somewhere between the vowels in ’bed’ and ’bad.’

The eerie tone is unlikely to be a precise reflection of the speech of Egyptian priest Nesyamun, because he has lost the bulk of its tongue over three millennia. Besides, the model alone also isn’t enough to synthesize whole words or sentences.

In the first longitudinal study of its kind, scientists analysed the immune response of more than 90 patients and healthcare workers at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS foundation trust and found levels of antibodies that can destroy the virus peaked about three weeks after the onset of symptoms then swiftly declined.

Blood tests revealed that while 60% of people marshalled a "potent" antibody response at the height of their battle with the virus, only 17% retained the same potency three months later. Antibody levels fell as much as 23- fold over the period. In some cases, they became undetectable.

They came to that decision because it proved difficult to obtain the cooperation from companies that would serve as sponsors for the huge sculptures.
