Peacocks, ostriches and baboons joined in an animal baby boom at Palestinian tiny Qalqilya Zoo during the coronavirus closure as they let nature take its course.

Fifteen animals were born during the two months that it shut its doors to visitors - three times more than usual, zoo officials said.

"The coronavirus spread at the same time that trips were expected at the zoo. They were cancelled and therefore the animals started to give birth," said zoo veterinarian Sami Khader.

The ostrich that laid eggs in normal years rarely had the chance to incubate them properly. But this year she produced 11 eggs and because there weren’t people around her, she was able to build a nest.

In the monkey enclosure, usually bedeviled by miscarriages, one baboon gave birth, although she had little inclination to take care of the baby. "My father had to bring him to our house," said the vet’s daughter, Hind Khader. "I took care of him and gave him milk."

Working mothers in Europe and the United States are taking on most of the extra housework and childcare created by lockdown - and many are struggling to cope, a survey showed.

Women with children now spend an average 65 hours a week on the unpaid chores - nearly a third more than fathers - according to the Boston Consulting Group, which questioned parents in five countries.

"Women have been doing too much household work for too long, and this crisis is pushing them to a point that’s simply unsustainable," Rachel Thomas, of U.S.-based women’s rights group LeanIn.Org, said in response to the data.

Kamtim, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, was discharged from hospital this week after a month of treatment in her hometown Surabaya, Indonesia’s second-biggest city, officials said.

A fleet of robots on wheels that deliver shopping in the English town of Milton Keynes have seen their popularity surge as residents are stuck indoors due to the coronavirus lockdown.

The robots, which come up roughly to an adult’s knee height and look like smooth white plastic boxes mounted on six black wheels, are a familiar sight in the town, where they have been delivering groceries for over two years.

Covid-19 has taken so much from us, but now it’s come for our emojis too.

As a result of the global pandemic, the Unicode Consortium, which sets standards for digital typography, has been forced to delay the next set of updates, from March 2021 until September 2021.

That will have a knock-on effect for OS at Apple and Google, who will struggle to implement the new designs on their normal timescale. All of which means that 2021 might see no brand new emojis.

That’s more of a hit than it might seem. On an emotional level, the rollout of new emojis is important people who want to represent themselves in the lingua franca of the 21st century. And on a technical level, the pictograms are an important carrot dangled by the smartphone manufacturers to get people to go through the effort of installing software updates, which are crucial to protect users from security vulnerabilities and hacking attacks.

"Everybody hopes for seasonality" when it comes to the coronavirus pandemic, Peter Juni of the University of Toronto acknowledged. Maybe, just maybe, the summer will diminish the spread of Covid-19.

But a new study, by Dr. Juni, an epidemiologist, and his colleagues in Canada and Switzerland, offers very little encouragement for warm-weather worshipers. In countries around the world, his research found, variations in heat and humidity had little to no effect on the spread of the pandemic. Differences in how the disease spread were instead strongly associated with public health measures like social distancing and school closures.

One reason is that most of the world’s population has no immunity to the virus. "This means the virus doesn’t need favorable conditions" to spread, Dr. Juni said.

Shaheedi divorced her husband eight years ago while she was pregnant. She and her son now live with her parents. Her father supports her work, even though Afghanistan’s patriarchal society forbids a woman from touching a man to whom she is not related or married.

"I support my daughter in every way, and she makes me proud the way she’s stood against this taboo," her father said.

She prefers not to keep a parlor with a fixed address out of concerns for her safety. And she usually finds and meets customers through Instagram and other social media. (AP)
