Gender will cease to be mentioned on identity cards in the Netherlands in the next few years because it is "unnecessary" information, the education and culture minister has said.

In a letter to parliament seen by AFP on Saturday, Ingrid van Engelshoven said gender categories would be omitted from ID cards "starting from 2024/2025".

Van Engelshoven said she intended to "limit where possible the unnecessary registration of gender" even if such information would continue to be included on passports in line with European Union regulations.

"The Netherlands will not be the first member state whose ID cards omit gender. The German ID card does not include it," the minister wrote.

People should be able to "create their own identity and live in full freedom and security", van Engelshoven said.

The pandemic has canceled many scheduled community fireworks displays. However, veterinarians worry that could lead to more people illegally setting them off at home.

"Home fireworks are actually less predictable than commercial fireworks," said Dr. M. Leanne Lilly from OSU’s Veterinary Medical Center. "With commercial fireworks, you know when they are going to start. You know when they are going to end. You can look up the schedule. You can prepare for them a lot better than you can not knowing when your neighbor five doors down is going to do them at 5 p.m. or 7 p.m. or 10 p.m."

Travelers on the Mexico City subway system often blame authorities for broken-down escalators at subway stops, but Metro officials have another explanation:vast amounts of pee.

Somehow, urine is penetrating and corroding the drive wheels and mechanisms of the escalators. The Metro system had listed "corrosion due to urine" as one of the top five causes of escalator breakdowns.

Fermin Ramirez, the system’s assistant manager for rails and facilities, said riders appear to be urinating on escalators at off-peak hours and lightly used stations.

Most stations have no public bathroom facilities, a fact Twitter users were quick to point out, noting there are not even any pay toilets.

Of the system’s 467 escalators, 22 are out of service on any given day. The biggest problem, subway authorities admit, is that the many escalators are old, or have been damaged by rough use.(AP)

The reigning constructors’ champions have traditionally raced in silver but will adopt the powerful look for the delayed campaign which begins in Austria this weekend.

World War II labor shortages had stretched the Philadelphia Transportation Co. to the limit by July 1944, and so the company decided it had no choice if the city’s buses, trolleys and subway were to keep running:It promoted eight black men to positions previously reserved for whites.

The racial fallout brought the city to a tense halt. A worker insurrection slowed production of critical supplies for troops overseas and prompted an Army employee to attack one of the nation’s most prominent symbols of freedom:the Liberty Bell.

There is a truth universally acknowledged by drivers in India: honk your horn loud enough and the traffic lights will surely change to green.

But, fed up with impatient drivers inflicting a deafening roar every time they are forced to stop, police in Mumbai have come up with a new system to punish those who cannot wait at traffic lights in silence.

The new system was quite simple: "Honk more, wait more."

Mumbai police installed a rigged traffic light system to tackle the problem of "reckless honkers", which resets the red traffic signal every time the sound of car horns goes above 85 decibels. For particularly honk-happy drivers, it could mean a very long wait at the lights.

Mumbai was ranked as the fourth most congested city in the world, according to the TomTom traffic index, with 65% congestion and drivers spending an average of eight days and 17 hours in traffic each year.(The Guardian)

With Japan lifting the state of emergency this week, a group of major theme park operators has introduced a set of guidelines on how to ensure the safety of both guests and staff in the face of Covid-19.

Some items will likely take visitors by surprise. Namely, a suggestion that theme parks encourage visitors riding outdoor attractions, including roller coasters, to avoid shouting or cheering - a tough ask, given how wild some of the country’s rides are.

The guidelines also say that if it’s difficult for some employees to wear masks due to the nature of their work - for example entertainers, such as haunted house staff - they should keep at least one meter away from visitors.
