As coronavirus forces billions of people around the world into lockdown, another sizeable population has also been hard hit - stray animals.

While pet owners in many countries are still allowed to walk their dogs, thousands of other animals - the exact numbers are unknown - are starving and turning feral.

"We are seeing an increase in the numbers of cats in areas where we feed, some appear to have been abandoned, while others have roamed far from their usual spots in search of food," says Cordelia Madden-Kanellopoulou, a co-founder of Nine Lives Greece, a network of volunteers dedicated to reducing the overpopulation of stray cats in Athens and other cities.

Local authorities in Japan are sacrificing tens of thousands of flowers to deter visitors, as the country attempts to contain the coronavirus outbreak.

Tiptoeing through the tulips or breathing in the scent of roses are popular spring rites in Japan, but there is concern that flower festivals could become the source of new infection clusters.

This week workers began severing the buds of about 3,000 rose bushes at Yono park in Saitama, north of Tokyo, in an attempt to keep flower viewers away.

The local government had already cancelled the annual rose festival, but the park is still open to the public, prompting the decision to rid the venue of its main attraction – 180 varieties of rose bushes that reach their peak from around the middle of May.

"It’s very painful, but we decided to take action after looking at the situation in other cities,” a local official told the Mainichi newspaper, adding that it would take about a week to remove all the buds.

The new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms for most people, but for older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness or death.

Barnes said that he has spent nearly three weeks in the cabin treehouse and often shouts down to his kids if he needs something, or sometimes walks up to the back of their home to make his request.

"They’re within yelling distance," he said. "I can call or go up to the glass. They know not to open the door and risk catching something." Of course, this self-isolation means his two sons, ages 6 and 9, lose their playhouse. "They love that thing, but they understand, so they’re not missing the treehouse."(AP)

The 11 turtle nests authorities have found since last November were the highest number in 20 years, said Kongkiat Kittiwatanawong, the director of the Phuket Marine Biological Center.

At the beginning of the lockdown, Chris had around 1,000 designs on his body. Now he has 40 more and counting. On his sternum - a place where it "feels like you’re going straight into the bone" - Chris withstood the pain to tattoo his own homage to the National Health Service.

The dismayed staff at the Ronttosrouva bakery found all their orders cancelled last month, at the same time as panicked consumers began to hoard toilet roll. This sparked the idea of a toilet roll cake made of oat batter, passion fruit mousse and covered with white fondant.

The first five cakes sold within an hour, baker Uliana Timofeeva told Reuters, and the cake became a social media hit.

The discoveries were the result of expeditions into Western Australia’s underwater canyons. One of the biggest discoveries was a siphonophore measuring an estimated 46 metres. Siphonophores are deep-sea predators made up of many small clones that act together as one and spread out like a single long string in the water.
