Fast walkers may live longer than dawdlers - regardless of their weight, a new study suggests.

Researchers at Leicester University analyzed data on 474,919 people with an average age of 52 in the UK Biobank between 2006 and 2016. The average life expectancy in the UK is 79 for men and nearly 82 for women.

They found women who walked briskly had a life expectancy of 86.7 to 87.8 years old, and men who kept up the pace had a life expectancy of 85.2 to 86.8. Conversely, participants with slower walking paces had shorter life expectancies.

It is believed those who stroll quicker exercise more, implying they are fitter. This protects them against high blood pressure, obesity and inactivity.

《中英對照讀新聞》Bad driving leads to $140 million drug bust in Sydney-糟糕駕駛導致雪梨破獲1.4億美元毒品

A clumsy driver led police to a A$200 million ($140 million) drug bust in Australia after he crashed a van laden with 270 kg of methamphetamines into a patrol car parked outside a police station in suburban Sydney.

The man, 28, slammed the drug-filled van into the empty police patrol car at Eastwood in the city’s north on Monday morning, crushing its bonnet, before speeding off, CCTV footage shows. He was caught by police an hour later.

A search of the vehicle turned up 273kg of ice, said police, who released footage of the drugs neatly packed in cardboard boxes, taped up and loaded into the back of the van. Police said in a statement the drugs had a street value of A$200 million.

The driver was arrested and charged with drug supply and negligent driving and is due in court on Tuesday. (Reuters)

中英對照讀新聞》 New limbs, new life for South Sudan amputees 新四肢為南蘇丹截肢者帶來新生活

Stephen, 12, romps confidently around the sunlit courtyard, playing with the other children, his prosthetic leg barely a hindrance.

When he was five years old, the car he and his family were travelling in hit a landmine in South Sudan’s northern town of Bentiu. His grandmother was killed. His left leg was shattered and had to be amputated.

Stephen was flown to a physical rehabilitation center run by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Juba, and received his first prosthesis in 2013. However, afterwards, war prevented Stephen from being able to return for new fittings every six months. When he finally made it to the center in April, his prosthesis was far too short.

South Sudan’s five-year-long civil war has left possibly tens of thousands of people without limbs - a toll that may never be accurately established.

Much of the country has limited resources of healthcare, and many limbs are amputated for no other reason than lack of treatment.

When he set up his own business washing boats and cars on the Greek island of Skyros nearly a decade ago, 42-year old Nikos Vourliotis was a young man with dreams and aspirations.

Then the reality of Greece’s austerity regime kicked in. A stipulation by debt-laden authorities that he should pay his annual tax bill upfront killed the business. Now, he has joined the growing ranks of Greeks in a precarious "gig economy" working long hours for low wages and no job security.
