Famed American author and poet Edgar Allan Poe died this month in 1849. While Poe's work continues to fascinate readers today, the author faced many hardships in his life. Born in 1809, Poe's father left soon after his birth, and his mother died when he was only two. The young author struggled to make a living out of his writing, but he had a brief period of success following the release of TheRaven, one of Poe's most famous poems. The happiness was short-lived as Poe's wife died of tuberculosis two years later.

知名美國作家兼詩人埃德加•愛倫•坡於1849年十月過世。雖然今日愛倫•坡的作品持續讓讀者著迷，但是這位作家在他的人生中卻面臨了許多艱辛。出生於1809年，愛倫•坡的父親在他誕生後沒多久就離開了，而他的母親則在他僅兩歲大時過世。這位年輕的作家勉強靠著他的寫作維生，但隨著愛倫•坡最為著名的詩作之一《烏鴉》的發行，他得到了短期的成功。幸福總是太過短暫，因為兩年後，愛倫•坡的妻子死於結核病。

Last weekend, while Maggie was waiting in a long line at the crowded bus station, she found a young man was trying to cut in line. At the same time, a middle-aged woman behind her got very angry at him when she found out what was going on.
The woman couldn’t stand his rude behavior, so she yelled at him “Shame on you!” However, the young man just shrugged his shoulders and stood still like he didn’t do anything wrong at all.

上週末，瑪姬在人潮擁擠、大排長龍的客運車站排隊等車時，她發現有個年輕人想插隊。同時，排在她後面的中年婦女發現了怎麼一回事時對他很生氣。

When John Lennon fi rst became famous, he joked with reporters and made fun of royalty. This type of behavior had never been seen before. Everyone wanted to be like Lennon. Teenagers started to question their elders and began to grow long hair. Adults began to question politicians and business leaders. By then, it was obvious that Lennon and the Beatles had started to change the world. As time went by, the musical genius started to write songs with strong messages.

約翰•藍儂剛開始出名的時候，他跟記者開玩笑並嘲笑英國王室。這種舉動是前所未見的。大家都想成為約翰•藍儂。青少年開始對他們的長輩提出質疑並開始留長髮。大人們則開始對政治人物和商業領袖提出質疑。到那時，藍儂和披頭四樂團顯然已開始改變這個世界。隨著時光流逝，這位音樂天才開始寫出帶有強烈信息的歌。

Lennon was born in 1940 in the English working class city of Liverpool. When his alcoholic father left the family,John stayed with his aunt, who looked after him as if she were his own mother. In 1957, he bought a guitar and started a band. By 1962, Lennon's band, the Beatles, had become the most popular band the world had ever seen.Their incredible success is unlikely to ever be repeated,not only because of their amazing music, but also for the changes they made to culture.

The little blue creatures called the Smurfs that live in mushroom houses first appeared this month in 1958. Belgian author and cartoonist Pierre Culliford fi rst created the tiny blue people in white caps and pants for a story about knights, kings, and magic in the Belgian magazine Spirou. The little blue people in the story looked and dressed nearly the same as one another, except for Papa Smurf, who is dressed in red and has a beard. The Smurfs’ appearance in the story proved to be so popular that they were given their own stories a year later.

這些住在磨菇屋裡名叫藍色小精靈的藍色小生物於 1958 年十月份首次出現。比利時作家兼漫畫家皮耶•庫利佛德為一本比利時雜誌 《Spirou》 裡的一個關於騎士、國王，以及魔法的故事首次把這些戴著白色帽子和穿著褲子的小藍人創造出來。故事中小藍人的長相以及穿著彼此幾乎一模一樣，除了穿著紅色服裝以及留著鬍子的精靈老爹。藍色小精靈在故事中的外貌證實十分受到歡迎，以至於一年後他們被賦予了他們自己的故事。
