Taiex mostly level in spite of US political problems (2013/10/01)

Investors on the Taiwan Stock Exchange mostly reacted with a shrug to the US government shutdown, with shares closing up by over a tenth of a percent. But if the shutdown continues for an extended period of time, the impact felt in the United States could be felt around the world.

With the US Congress failing to reach agreement on a budget, a partial government shutdown began today. About 800,000 federal workers who are considered non-essential face unpaid leave, and 368 federal parks will close.

In Washington, the Smithsonian museums, 18 in total, will be closed for business, bad news for tourists. The iconic Washington Monument won’t be accepting visitors. You will have to wait on your trip to the National Zoo as well. That will also be closed to the public.

Essential services such as air traffic control, airport security checks, overseas consulates and embassies, and visa services will remain open.

We have a budget and staff, so there won’t be any problems. Visa and immigration services will continue.

In Asia, markets mostly closed up today, with investors believing the shutdown will be short-lived. But an analyst in Taiwan said the deadlock in Washington could disrupt exchange rates and hurt local exporters.

If the (US debt ceiling) isn’t raised by mid-October, the US dollar will weaken, which would lead to a stronger NT dollar.

Today the NT dollar strengthened by about five hundredths of an NT to close at NT$29.615 against the greenback.
