(Education) Study Shows Sporting Success Leads to Lower Grades
The report was written by researchers at the University of Oregon.
Most colleges love it when their sports teams do well. It makes the school look good, it brings them money, and it makes students happy.
Unfortunately, it might also make them less smart. A new study by University of Oregon economists shows that there is a connection between sporting success and falling grades.
The writers of the paper concluded that “our results support the concern that big-time sports are a threat to American higher education.”
Students at the University of Oregon drank more alcohol and partied more when the football team did well. This increase in partying always came at the same time as a fall in grades.
The researchers also spoke to some of the students. They said they were more likely to miss class when the team was doing well.
Glen R. Waddell, one of the authors, said: “I teach these students, and I know that on Thursdays there’s [a]…distraction in the classroom, and the game isn’t even until Saturday.”
