Tokyo sees heavy snowfall leading to disruption of air travel (2014/02/09)

Two days of heavy snowfall has led to travel chaos in Tokyo, Japan. Beginning Saturday afternoon, Tokyo’s Haneda Airport has seen hundreds of flights grounded, stranding 5,000 passengers. Even flights from Taiwan to Japan have been cancelled or delayed.

Snow continues to fall leading to a chaotic two days at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport with hundreds of flights grounded and upwards of 5,000 passengers stranded at the airport. Many do not know what to do.

This is Terminal 1 at Haneda Airport. This large passageway is crowded with people, with many on the right moving, while those on the left are trying to reschedule canceled flights or get a refund. And there are 30-40 people carrying suitcases as they prepare to board a flight as the airport is quite crowded.

Air traffic at this airport has become congested, potentially impacting flights from Taiwan to Japan across different carriers.

This tour guide is on the phone and is concerned about the latest conditions as the Japanese Meteorological Agency predicts the snow storm is expected to continue as travelers are encouraged to confirm their flights before heading to the airport to avoid delays.
