[[cg out]]

Electricity and postal fees go higher next month

Price hikes continue, though salaries don’t seem to be rising. Next month consumers will face higher electricity costs when summer rates take effect. International postage fees will also increase.

Turning on the lights or air conditioner will be a little more expensive when summer rates take effect in June. People may need to exercise restraint as electricity rates will rise between 13 and 25 percent. This will make the summer heat a little more unbearable.

The cost of running the fan or the air conditioner will go up, but salaries remain stagnant. We can’t handle the sharp rise in prices.”

In addition to higher electricity prices, postage rates are increasing. Starting next month the cost of sending a registered international letter will increase from NT$45 to NT$65, a rise of more than 40 percent. The cost of insuring international mail will increase to NT$20 for up to NT$1,000 in coverage, with each additional NT$1,000 in coverage rising from NT$4 to NT$10.

Wu I-hua

Chunghwa Post VP

Because of rising international postage costs, we have to pay more to the postal systems of the nations the mail is sent to. We are not increasing our own rates.

The higher prices for everything from electricity to postal expenses are putting a squeeze on the general public, which for years has been waiting for an increase in average salaries.
