《中英對照讀新聞》NK missile appears to be Russia’s Iskander: experts - 專家:朝飛彈似仿俄「伊斯坎德」飛彈

While the North’s military did not disclose the exact type of the missiles fired Thursday, photographs released by the KCNA revealed projectiles that bear outward similarities to the ground-to-ground short-range ballistic missiles known as Russia’s Iskander.

Pyongyang first showed off its version of Iskander during a military parade in February last year, and had not test-fired before. "Given, in particular, that the altitude of what North Korea fired on Saturday and yesterday all reached around 50 km, they seem to be the same type of Iskander ballistic missiles," said Shin Jong-woo, a senior analyst at the Korea Defense and Security Forum in Seoul.

Some suspect that the projectiles fired Thursday could be scud-type missiles or medium-range Nodong ones, but others pointed out scud-type or Nodong missiles should reach a peak elevation of 80 km in order to cover a ground distance of 280 km. "After carrying out an initial test last week on the east coast, the North appears to have taken the weapons to its western region for a next-phase test, which is a typical way of its developing missiles," Shin added.

Shallow or Self-Empowering? Below the Surface of the Selfie

With every click, flick, and swipe, social media feeds seem to be flooded with a tidal wave of selfies, particularly of women.Back in 2014, Google revealed that 93 million selfies were taken every day—and that was just on Android devices. Some website polls suggest women between the ages of 16 to 25 spend five hours a week taking selfies. Are women really so self-obsessed that they need the perfect picture to show off to the world?

Pokémon Detective Pikachu

Since its launch in 1996, Pokémon has been a global hit. The brand has sold more than two billion trading cards and made over US$700 million from movies and US$300 million from video games. In addition, its popular app, Pokémon GO, has been downloaded 650 million times. Even if Pokémon went away today, it would still be the most successful media brand in world history. However, fans continue to want more—and they’re in luck, because Pokémon Detective Pikachu is arriving in theaters this month.

Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte has threatened to "go to war" with Canada if the country doesn’t take back tons of trash a Canadian company had shipped to Manila.

Duterte made threats Tuesday about dozens of shipping containers filled with Canadian household and electronic garbage that has been rotting in a port near Manila for nearly six years. More than 100 of the containers were shipped to Manila by a Canadian company in 2013 and 2014, improperly labelled as plastics for recycling.

Customs inspectors in the Philippines found they actually contained non-recyclable garbage, including soiled adult diapers and kitchen trash. The Philippines has been calling on Canada for years to repatriate its trash.

Duterte often uses bombastic statements. Earlier this month, for instance, he threatened to send his troops on a "suicide mission" if Beijing didn’t lay off a Manila-occupied island in the South China Sea.

It seems that we are getting closer and closer to a world in which robots can do anything—or almost anything. Meet Atlas, a 1.8-meter-tall robot that can jump and perform back flips, Parkour-style. Atlas was developed by American robotics company Boston Dynamics to help in search and rescue missions. This robot has been programmed to perform various tasks such as opening doors, using tools, and getting in and out of—and even driving—a car. According to a survey conducted by the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs, out of 2,464 unmarried Koreans asked - 1,140 men and 1,324 women between the ages of 20-44 - those who replied that a wedding ceremony is a must stood at a mere 10 percent.

"Overall, the ratio of (survey respondents) in favor of a wedding stands at about half the people surveyed. But the portion of those who replied that a wedding is a must drops to the 10 percentage range. This is attributable to the growing importance of one’s decision and judgment and less importance placed on formality in marriage," said the institute.

"Such responses were not confined to a certain group, which shows increasing emphasis on personal choice over social norms," said the institute. In Korea, a couple can formalize their marriage by registering a declaration of marriage with the local authorities, with no need for a ceremony.

Magic lanterns were devices that let people watch images on a wall. A lantern would shine light on photo slides to make the pictures appear bigger. Then, everyone in the room could look at the large images. Although the first magic lantern was invented in the 1500s, few people bought them because they were too costly. During the 1800s, brilliant businesspeople came up with an idea. They began renting lanterns to customers for a few days. Families could then afford to use them.

Japanese adults have their first heterosexual sexual experiences later than their counterparts in the United States and the UK, according to a new study.

The study found that sexual inexperience was on the rise in Japan, with the percentage of women aged 18 to 39 who’d never had sex rising to 24.6% in 2015 from 21.7% in 1992. The change was greater for men of the same age, with 25.8% virgins in 2015, up from 20% in 1992.

By comparison, surveys from the UK, the United States and Australia suggest that rates of heterosexual inexperience are between 1% to 5% of adults in or around their 30s. The study said Japan appears to be an outlier.

The results are likely to be cause for concern given Japan’s ongoing battle with population decline and a low fertility rate. The issue is important in Japan because it is considered a "super-aged" nation, meaning more than 20% of its population is over 65 years old.

The South Korean government pledged Monday to invest more than 30 trillion won to establish a full-fledged 5G environment by 2022, as the country beat its competitor by a hair to begin commercial services of the hyperspeed network on April 4.

During an event to mark the achievement at the Olympic Park in Seoul, President Moon Jae-in vowed to create $73 billion worth of exports and 600,000 jobs by 2026. To achieve the goal, the government pledged to promote industries such as autonomous driving and digital medical care.

According to the president, the global 5G industry will become a 1,161 trillion won market by 2026, about twice as large as that of semiconductors. To encourage prompt construction of nationwide 5G networks, the government vowed to lower taxes for network construction by up to 3 percent.
