Taipei City Councilor Lai Su-ru faces a maximum of life in prison (2013/07/25)
The Taipei District Prosecutor’s Office has concluded its investigation into the Taipei Twin Towers bribery case. It brought three charges against Taipei City Councilor Lai Su-ju, a former close aide of President Ma Ying-jeou. Lai faces up to life in prison.

I will respect the legal process and investigation. I hope that this case can be explained quickly so my innocence can be restored, said Lai.
The investigation into Lai’s involvement in the Taipei Twin Towers scandal lasted four months. Prosecutor Huang Mo-hsin made a strong statement Thursday when filing charges.

Prosecutors in charge of the case believe the defendant seriously damaged the belief that elected representatives cannot be bought as well as the integrity of civil affairs, says Huang. Despite clear incriminating evidence, defendant Lai Su-ju still denies the allegations. We ask the judge to impose a stiff punishment.
Prosecutors found that Lai used her position to pressure city officials into supporting Taipei Gateway International Development’s bid to win the Taipei Twin Towers project. In return, they say she received kickbacks of NT$1 million, and was promised another NT$9 million when the deal was closed. Prosecutors filed three counts of charges against her for accepting bribes, concealing illegal income and possessing unaccounted assets. They requested that the court give Lai a stiff sentence and deprive her of her civil rights. She faces a maximum sentence of life.
But her defense lawyer believes the NT$1 million she took was a political donation, not a bribe.
