Tomorrow is the start of the Railway Festival, as people celebrate 127 years of the Taiwan Railway. A number of activities were held at the Hualien Train Station today, attracting quite a crowd.

Passengers were treated to a free ride aboard a steam engine. The activity attracted not only local railway enthusiasts, but also a man from Osaka, Japan, who sought to add to his railway memorabilia collection.

KMT Spokesman Chen I-hsin rebutted reports the party would replace incumbent municipal leaders in Taoyuan County and Taichung City in upcoming elections. There was speculation that a switch similar to that of former Taipei County Commissioner Cho Hsi-wei could be in the works due to low approval ratings and bribery charges. Chen said the comments were totally baseless and untrue.

This year, six recent graduates from the school undertook a special three-day, two-night bike trip that covered 133 kilometers. The Pingtung County Commissioner Tsao Chi-hung presented each of them with a diploma at the conclusion of this graduating trip.

In presenting the figures today, the Taiwan-based China Credit Information Service said the gap resulted from most of the profits being concentrated among the biggest companies.

But it also urged Taiwan to push harder for integration with the world economy and suggested negotiating a bilateral investment agreement with the United States as one way to accomplish that.

AmCham Taipei recently released the 2014 Taiwan White Paper. In this year’s report, 26.2 percent of the indicators performed better than last year.

Getting into the best high schools in the greater Taipei area under Taiwan’s new 12-year education program is anything but easy. One way to do is by doing well on an assessment exam that tests students in five subjects and on a separately scored essay. The results of the exams taken in mid-May were released today, and competition was so tight, fewer than the top 1 percent of exam takers will get into the elite Taipei schools.
