The first musical machines came from Iraq in the 9th century and were powered by water. Starting in the 16th century, European clockmakers figured out how to make other machines that could play music by themselves, even without water. These machines developed over the centuries to become smaller and more complex. The first music boxes went into production in 1811 in Sainte-Croix, Switzerland. These music boxes were so popular that making them made up 10 percent of Switzerland's economy at the time.
The production of music boxes was at their height in the late 1800s, when many kinds of mechanical toys were popular. Unfortunately, by World War I the music box industry had fallen apart. The war made music boxes an expensive luxury. Also, the invention of the phonograph made music boxes out-of-date.

In November of 2011, NASA launched its newest rover named Curiosity to explore the surface of Mars. Recently, Curiosity 's instruments detected methane gas in the Martian atmosphere. The presence of methane is significant because it may indicate that some form of life exists on the red planet. While the rover's findings are not certain, it does open the possibility that Earth may not be the only planet with life on it. The discoveries that NASA is making today are important, but not nearly as impressive as what lies ahead.
The space agency has a few more projects that, if realized, will bring us a bit closer into the world of science fiction. First among these missions is a proposed plan to build solar-powered airships that would float high up in the atmosphere of Venus.

The first female pilot to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, Amelia Earhart, was born this month in 1897. Earhart, who always had a spirit for adventure, got her first bit of excitement when she attached a ramp to the roof of her family's tool shed and slid off it in a wooden box. The seven-year-old crashed to the ground and shouted that it was just like flying. From then on, the young Earhart did whatever she could to get herself in the air.
As a young adult, Earhart worked a number of odd jobs to save enough money for pilot lessons. It was not long afterwards that Earhart began setting records. On October 22, 1922, she became the first female pilot to fly over 14,000 feet.

Angkor Wat has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1992. Nowadays, it sees hundreds of thousands of visitors every year coming through. All these visitors mean that it is a challenge to maintain this unique historic site. So far, however, the only damage has been some minor graffiti, but there have been some structures added for protection and tourist safety. At one point, bacteria from tourists’ hands were starting to damage the stone of the ruins, so guests are asked not to touch any of the buildings. Between UNESCO and the Cambodian government, the monument has been protected remarkably well. It looks like this unique place will remain popular for generations to come.

Peng’s death is just another reminder of how dangerous social media can be. While websites like Facebook and Twitter can bring people together, they can also be a place for nasty comments to be posted anonymously. In the case of Peng, posts from the fan page Kao Bei Bloggers regularly attacked Peng over her appearance. Fans and family of Peng have gone public to speak out against cyberbullying by criticizing the actions of those who leave hurtful messages over the Internet.

In the game of Jenga, players start with a wooden tower of blocks. The blocks, 54 in all, are piled up in 18 levels consisting of three blocks each. Each level sits across from the one below. Then, the players take turns pulling pieces out. After sliding out a block, players must carefully place it on top. As the game continues, the tower becomes more and more unstable until it finally crashes. Whoever knocks down the tower loses the game.
The game dates back to the early 1970s in Ghana, where inventor Leslie Scott played a variation of it using wooden building blocks. She launched the game at the London Toy Fair in 1983, and since then about 50 million games have been sold. The tallest tower ever built was said to be more than 40 levels high. A fascinating Middle Eastern dance has been attracting audiences for centuries. Belly dancing is often performed by a woman dressed in a costume as she shakes and moves her hips and torso. The name belly dancing is actually a bit misleading because it is the hips and torso of the dancer that do most of the moving, instead of the belly. The actual performance is usually accompanied by a variety of Arabian-style rhythms and beats. Belly dancing is believed to have a long history in the Middle East, though its exact origin is difficult to trace. What is known, however, is that today’s dancers use techniques and movements similar to those used by the belly dancers during the days of the Ottoman Empire.
