The Taiwan electronics maker Hon Hai hopes to complete a deal to buy a stake in Japan’s Sharp this week. At a summit in Tokyo Hon Hai Chairman Terry Gou emphasized strategic cooperation, though he would not discuss the price his company will pay to enter the partnership.
In the background were the Japanese and Taiwanese flags. Vincent Siew, the former Taiwanese vice president, also came for the industrial cooperation summit. He called for the two economies to work together in overcoming difficulties.

It’s important to keep risk to a minimum while competing for markets. Take Japan for example. When I look at matters from a Japanese perspective, I feel that Taiwan is the best way to minimize risk. So I work with Taiwanese enterprises.

Hon Hai Chairman
We can win the battle using the advantages each side brings to the table. Of course I’m not in a position to say which company or country we are competing against.
It’s clear that the country and company Gou would not say are Korea and Samsung. Gou plans to buy a stake in Sharp, the struggling Japanese electronics firm. It desperately needs an injection of cash, which will come when Hon Hai buys what is likely a 9.9 percent stake, though the price is not yet clear. Gou didn’t give any hints to reporters.
Investors are treating the Hon Hai-Sharp partnership as a test to see if Taiwanese and Japanese firms can cooperate to beat a Korean goliath. Gou meanwhile is keeping details of the partnership under wraps until it is complete. He hopes that happens by Thursday.
