前民進黨主席林義雄，昨天宣布停止禁食，民進黨立委田秋菫透露，他目前很平安，請大家放心。她也說，其實林義雄原本禁食的決心非常強烈，但因為認清，不能只看當權者，同時看到民眾紛紛站出來，「台灣還值得他繼續奮鬥」，因此宣布停止禁食。

詩人吳晟的兒子吳志寧，特別獻唱這首《生命的日頭》，力挺禁食反核的前民進黨主席林義雄。

立委田秋菫透露，原本林義雄身體虛弱到，連牛奶都不能喝，所幸開始食用流質食物，讓他的身體逐漸好轉。其實，林義雄禁食的決心，非常堅定，讓他回心轉意，有個關鍵轉折。

(他)除了水以外，什麼都不吃，所以這次完全是台灣人民的反應跟力量，把他留了下來，忠孝東路以及立法院旁邊的事情，更加突顯了他的朋友長期來，苦勸他的事情，就是說，不能只看執政者的反應。他真的有什麼不幸的話，整個社會會陷入非常大的動亂，對於這些無辜者受傷流血，他是會在意的，他真的有看到台灣人民的力量。

田秋菫說林義雄出院之後，應該會先回宜蘭，好好陪伴妻子，並調養身體。接下來，他還要推動《公投法》修正、阻止立法院通過《自經區特別條例》。

Former DPP Chairman Lin Yi-hsiung ended his hunger strike against nuclear power on Wednesday and is now said to be resting comfortably in the hospital. Public protests triggered by the hunger strike forced the government to put the controversial fourth nuclear power plant project on hold, but a DPP legislator said Lin came to his decision because of the support he received. 

Zulin Wu, the son of poet Wu Sheng, sings the song The Sun of Life to show his support for former DPP Chairman Lin Yi-hsiung, who ended a hunger strike on Wednesday. 

Legislator Tien Chiu-chin said Lin’s condition was to the point where he could not drink milk, but he has been able to ingest liquid food to help him gradually recover. Lin was determined to see his hunger strike through, she said, but he changed his mind because of popular support.

Aside from water, he didn’t ingest anything, so it was the response and power of Taiwan’s people that kept him alive. The events on Zhongxiao West Road and next to the Legislature demonstrated what his friends had been telling him, that he couldn’t just pay attention to the reaction of those in power. If something happened to him, society would be plunged into massive turmoil, and he worried about the innocent who might be hurt and shed blood. He really did see the power of the Taiwanese people. 

Tien suggested that after being discharged from the hospital, Lin should return to Yilan to recuperate. She said that in the future Lin hopes to push for an amendment to the “Referendum Act” and stop the Legislature from passing a bill creating free economic pilot zones.

民間反核行動一波波，總統府傳出將利用第一夫人周美青，下個月訪問日本的機會，安排她到福島災區，探視災民，也展現政府重視核安的決心。不過，外交部發言人高安嚴正駁斥傳聞，強調沒有安排去福島，此行更無涉核安。

第一夫人周美青，6月23號，將出席台北故宮文物首次赴日參展的開展茶會，不過，傳出府方對她另有規劃，前往福島災區了解當地重建狀況。

不過，目前福島第一核電廠半徑二十公里內，仍列為管制區，除了少數區域開放災民重回家園，大部分仍不開放，要探訪民眾，恐怕沒那麼容易。

相關的文物交流行程，故宮仍在規劃之中，目前尚未定案。

外交部否認外界傳聞，儘管台日關係友好，雙方畢竟不是邦交國，府方只能低調進行。這也是周美青以明華園榮譽團長、世界展望會愛心大使身份訪問歐美國家後，第五度拉近非邦交國與台灣的距離。

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has refuted reports that first lady Chow Mei-ching will visit nuclear disaster victims during her trip to Japan next month. Chow will instead focus on cultural exchanges as part of a landmark loan of artifacts from the National Palace Museum. 

On June 23, Taiwanese first lady Chow Mei-ching will go to Japan to attend the opening of an exhibit featuring artifacts from the National Palace Museum. It is the first time the museum is loaning its treasures to Japan. According to reports, as part of the visit, Chou was also going to travel to a nuclear disaster zone to examine rebuilding progress.

The area within a 20-kilometer radius of the Fukushima Daiichi plant remains a restricted zone, with only a few sections reopened for residents to return to their homes. Visitations are not easy, and according to officials, Chow will not be making one.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not planned any such itinerary. These reports are inaccurate, and (Chow’s trip) is unrelated to nuclear safety. National Palace Museum is still planning the itinerary for the loaning of artifacts.

Taiwan and Japan have good relations, but without official diplomatic relations, the trip will be low key. Since becoming first lady, it is the fifth visit by Chou to an unofficial ally, after having previously traveled to the United States and Europe in her capacity as honorary leader of the Ming Hwa Yuan Arts and Cultural Group and ambassador for World Vision.

立法院財政委員會今天初審通過史上最大加稅案，金融營業稅從現行2%加回到5%。同時富人稅也要提高，綜所稅課稅級距從現行五級調整為六級，年所得淨額超過1000萬以上的，稅率提高到45%。

(年所得淨額超過一千萬的)9500人，那可以課將近99億的稅。富人稅反對的聲音幾乎沒有聽到。

財委會初審也通過，金融營業稅率從現行2%恢復到5%，估計稅收一年可以增加兩百億。金融營業稅率原來就是5%，但為了讓銀行克服在亞洲金融危機時造成的損失，在1999年降低為2%。

史上最大加稅案出了財委會，這會期完成三讀的話，明年實施，乾涸的國庫將吃下大補丸。

The Legislature’s Finance Committee approved one of the biggest tax increases in Taiwan’s history Thursday. The measure would dramatically increase the business tax on financial services and add a new tax bracket that will tax high income earners at a higher rate. The bill still has to pass two votes of the full Legislature before it becomes law. 

The bill that made it through committee would add a sixth tax bracket for those with taxable incomes of more than NT$10 million a year. The highest marginal tax rate would be raised to 45 percent, from the current 40 percent.

There are about 9,500 people with net annual incomes over NT$10 million. It will raise about NT$9.9 billion in new tax revenue. We haven’t heard any voices of opposition to this tax on the wealthy. 

The legislation also increases the business tax on financial services to 5 percent, from the current 2 percent. It would bring in an estimated NT$20 billion in additional taxes. The tax rate was originally 5 percent but was lowered in 1999 to help banks survive losses caused by the Asian Financial Crisis.

In the past, the government has given you a lot of support. Now that government finances are tight, this is like a tax giveback. 

Should the tax bill be enacted during the current legislative session, the measures will take effect starting next year.

Next we head to Nantou County to visit the camera crew of the FTV show “Look at Taiwan from High Above.” By attaching a camera to a drone, the cameramen capture images of the land from perspectives most people have never seen. 

In order to capture a view of the Sun Moon Lake cable car from above, the film crew must choose just the right launching spot.

A camera is then attached to the drone, which will be controlled via remote control.

受到梅雨鋒面來襲，天氣也變得很不穩定，除了下大雨，溫度也下降，氣象局預估，要到周五之後，降雨狀況才會解除，但母親節又會有新鋒面報到。

天上灰矇矇、地上濕答答，一陣又一陣的雨勢，宣告梅雨鋒面來報到，而且母親節又會有鋒面來攪局。

趁著梅雨季的來到，水利署今天凌晨在石門和曾文水庫，都發動人造雨作業，因為今年四月的平均雨量，幾乎只有往年的一半。希望能為集水區帶來更豐沛的雨量。

即使梅雨鋒面帶來大量降雨，台中水庫的旱象未解，倒是石門和曾文水庫，因為大雨帶來水量，讓水庫可以撐到五月底，等待梅雨季節來紓解旱象。

A plum rain front has arrived, bringing precipitation and lower temperatures. Forecasters predict wet weather to linger to end of the work week before another front brings more rain over the weekend, and hopefully relief to the nation’s dried-out reservoirs. 

The sky is overcast and the ground below is wet after a succession of rainfall brought by a plum rain front. The outlook for Mother’s Day this weekend is no better as a new weather front is expected to arrive.

Until Friday and Saturday, we expect the weather front to be located more toward northern Taiwan, though the entire island could see rainfall, which will become more localized and sporadic. Before and after Mother’s Day, we expect a new weather front to impact Taiwan.

With the plum rain season arriving, early this morning the Water Resources Agency seeded clouds in hopes of generating rain around the Shihmen and Tsengwen reservoirs. Rainfall in April was about half of previous years, which has led to restrictions.

At the moment, our water control measures include capping household and industrial water use at 12 million tons and cutting water for agricultural use by 15 percent.

Despite this plum rain front, Taichung’s reservoirs continue to face critical shortages. As for the Shihmen and Tsengwen reservoirs, the added rain has provided enough water to last until the end of May.

"為不能跑的人而跑"作號召的全球公益路跑賽，台灣時間週日晚間，與全球六大洲，34個賽道的跑者，同步開跑，創下世界新紀錄，台灣總共有3000多名跑者參加，在花蓮七星潭美麗星光下，一起享受路跑樂趣又奉獻愛心。

全球數以萬計的跑者，齊聚起跑線前，為脊髓損傷患者募款，為不能跑的人而跑。

全球無時差同步開跑，台灣起跑時間是傍晚六點，美國西岸是半夜三點鐘，紐西蘭是晚上十點。比賽不設終點線，跑者起跑後半小時後，官方的終結者號(Catcher Car)，以15公里的時速，開始追逐跑者，最後一個被追上的就是優勝者。

台灣這回有超過三千名跑者參與，享受花蓮七星潭風光，38歲的電腦工程師李志群，在九點半被終結者號追上，以48.05公里拿下男子組冠軍，女子組則是汪旖文以29.58K成績，獲得冠軍。

Sunday evening in Hualien more than 3,000 runners took part in a special race held in conjunction with races in 32 other countries. The unique format of the first Wing for Life World Run allowed a single competition to spread across borders. 

Tens of thousands of runners, packed along starting lines found along the world, began a run like any other to find a cure for spinal cord injury.

Runners in each location started at the same time: 6 pm in Taiwan, 3 am on the US west coast and 10 pm in New Zealand. There was no finish line; half an hour after the start of the race, a catcher car set off in pursuit of the runners at 15 kilometers per hour. The last person to be passed by the car would be named winner.

More than 3,000 people in Taiwan took part in the race, held in the scenic area of Cising, Hualien. A 38-year-old computer programmer named Lee Chih-chun placed top among local racers, completing over 48 kilometers before being caught at 9:30. Among local women, first place went to Wang Yi-wen, who finished nearly 30 kilometers.

陳常誌還說，中國業者用用等比級數方式在成長的”模仿”能力，也是他們在中國最重要的挑戰之一。

In the past, Taiwanese businesspeople who sought their fortunes in China often had a capital advantage. Not anymore, leading a new generation of entrepreneurs to concentrate on smaller service industry businesses. Follow our report as we visit two Taiwanese entrepreneurs in Shanghai and examine the challenges they face.

When we open a shop over here, the procedures are very complicated. You need to complete a variety of different approval procedures.

Because Tseng failed to thoroughly understand regulations, shops have been ordered closed on three different occasions. Another entrepreneur, Chen Chang-chih, has been involved in the children’s photography business for 10 years. Rents have risen threefold.

The current situation has brought some difficulties. After 2007 and 2008, customer turnover began to slow and space rental costs exceeded expectations.

Chen says Chinese businesses frequently copy or imitate other successful businesses, posing yet another difficult challenge in the China market.

寶島股價指數基期指數為1萬點，今天以 1萬0361點開出，終場以1萬0373點作收。該指數電子股比重達到五成三，最大的權值股是台積電，其次是鴻海。

The Formosa Stock Index was officially launched today. It provides a new mechanism for evaluating performance of the Taiwan Stock Exchange and Taiwan’s main over-the-counter market. 

The index opened today at 10,361 points, and by the end of trade had risen slightly to reach 10,373. Shares of electronics companies account for over half of the index, with the largest weighting belonging to TSMC, followed by Hon Hai.

第一階段黨內初選和連勝文進行對比式民調後，勝出的人，一個月內還要和柯文哲pk，能夠獲得最高民意支持的，才有資格代表在野參選台北市長。

With elections to take place in November, the DPP has yet to decide whether it will even put forward a nominee for one of the biggest prizes, mayor of Taipei. The latest news points to an intraparty poll taking place later this week or the beginning of next week. The winner would then face leading independent contender Dr. Ko Wen-je in another poll to determine an opposition nominee. 

At the site of the former Songshan tobacco factory, Legislator Hsu Tain-tsair braved the rain to show concern for ancient trees. Two days earlier, Legislator Pasuya Yao visited the same location.

Campaign activities are picking up steam ahead of the DPP Taipei primary poll. Party headquarters has decided for candidates to conduct negotiations on Wednesday and for a party winner to be chosen within the following week. Therefore, a poll would take place sometime between Thursday and next Tuesday.

Since the 14th is the date set for naming the party candidate but you only announced negotiations today, we should postpone matters as much as possible. Therefore, we should consider holding the poll on the 14th or the 13th. After all, there is only about a week to prepare.

I believe that the person who passes the party primary will have a greater chance of being the final nominee. It’s my understanding that poll prospects won’t change much day to day. So I think there’s little difference between holding it on Thursday, the following Tuesday or some other day.

The party poll will pit each candidate against KMT nominee Sean Lien. The winner will then be entered in another poll that includes independent candidate Ko Wen-je, with the winner becoming the main opposition candidate.

國安局長蔡得勝，日前在學運期間就多次表達辭意，今天下午總統府發出新聞稿，表示基於健康因素，同意蔡得勝請辭，轉任國策顧問，遺缺由國防部副部長李翔宙接任。

國安局長蔡得勝，出席立法院國防委員會，被問到去留問題，他老神在在。

蔡得勝笑笑回應記者提問，沒想到，總統府下午就發出新聞稿，宣布聘任蔡得勝為總統府國策顧問。國安會也隨即表示，蔡得勝受眼疾所擾，醫生建議儘早醫治休養，馬總統才勉予同意辭呈。

其實學運期間，蔡得勝就因為立法院、行政院相繼被攻陷，數度傳出惹得高層不悅，萌生辭意。而接任者，則是國防部副部長李翔宙。

In a government shakeup, National Security Bureau Director Tsai De-sheng has resigned for health reasons. He will become a policy advisor to the president. Replacing Tsai will be Deputy Defense Minister Lee Hsiang-chou. 

At the Legislature’s National Defense Committee meeting, when asked about his future role in the government, National Security Bureau Director Tsai De-sheng joked that his fate was up to God.

Tsai smiled when responding to reporter questions about whether he would remain in his current post. By the afternoon, a Presidential Office press release announced that Tsai would be appointed national policy advisor. The bureau then announced that Tsai was suffering from eye trouble and doctors recommended he rest and recover. It cited this as the reason for President Ma approving Tsai’s resignation from his current post.

During the student-led Sunflower Movement and occupation of the Legislature and Executive Yuan, displeasure from ranking officials led to several reports of Tsai’s resignation. Now that his departure is official, his successor will be Deputy Defense Minister Lee Hsiang-chou. 

總統馬英九的媽媽秦厚修女士，日前不幸病逝，今天上午舉行火化儀式，她的骨灰罈安厝在富德公墓靈骨樓內，與亡夫馬鶴凌相伴。

馬總統手拿媽媽秦厚修女士的遺照，走在棺木後面，後頭跟著夫人周美青、兩個女兒及馬總統的四位姐妹及家人，一起送媽媽最後一程。

大姐馬以南也宣讀親手寫的祭文。

秦厚修女士的喪禮不設靈堂，不辦公祭，一切從簡。遺體火化後，秦厚修女士的骨灰罈最後送往富德公墓的靈骨樓，與馬鶴凌先生的塔位放在一起。

送走了最愛的媽媽，馬總統也帶領家人，用鞠躬表達感謝。

In a private ceremony today President Ma Ying-jeou bid farewell to his mother, Chin Hou-hsiu. Guests were mostly limited to close family and friends who paid their respects after Chin’s passing Friday at the age of 91 of acute respiratory failure. 

While holding a photo of his late mother, President Ma Ying-jeou walked behind the coffin. Behind him was first lady Chow Mei-ching, the president’s two daughters, four sisters and other family members.

The funeral was simple, with no special prayer memorial and no public service. After cremation, Chin’s remains were to be placed beside her husband’s at a Taipei columbarium.

警政署找旅遊節目主持人Janet，擔任預防犯罪代言人，她接下代言不只是玩玩而已，做到連男警察都不一定能做到的事，6天密集訓練，讓她能跟霹靂小組同時從15樓一躍而下，滑降到6樓，真的是藝高人膽大。

登上15樓凌空躍下，很多人光看就暈了，Janet卻採用正面朝下的姿勢，緊抓繩索腳蹬牆壁，滑降30公尺高度，順利降落到6樓陽台，與其他霹靂小組成員，一起完成任務。

為了代言警政署犯罪預防大使，Janet事前還接受6天嚴格訓練。

從3樓高度「基本款」開始慢慢練習，最後要從刑事局科技大樓往下跳，真跳總共六次，在媒體面前則是第七次。

特別的是，Janet的媽媽全程觀賞，卻毫無擔心緊張的情緒。

Travel host Janet Hsieh teamed up with the National Police Agency to showcase another one of her talents, fighting crime. After training with a local Thunder Squad SWAT team as part of a promotional campaign, Janet rappelled off a 15-story building. 

Many people get dizzy when standing on the 15th floor of a building but not Janet. She rappelled down the side of this building clutching only a rope, descending some 30 meters with little effort before landing on the sixth floor balcony. She did this feat with other members of a local SWAT team.

Descending in a position parallel to the ground means you have to look directly down. Everyone looks very small and even cars look small. If you look this way, you need to lower your heartbeat. The first step is the hardest, though there is little to think about after you make that step. 

Janet completed this task as part of her role as a National Police Agency crime prevention ambassador. The assignment included six days in advanced police training.

Rappelling began with basic training from a height of just three floors, and in the end, she was able to descend from a Criminal Investigation Bureau building. She descended from this building seven times, with the media recording her final jump.

A special guest in the audience was Janet’s mother, who was confident her daughter could successfully complete the descent.

銀合歡曾經是澎湖人早年煮飯燒水用的柴火，但隨著時代進步，古灶被油瓦斯爐取代，也讓銀合歡失去舞台，反倒變成澎湖人發展觀光的夢魘，澎湖縣政府從去年開始進行鏟除，更廣植美麗天人菊以及薰衣草花海等，果然增加觀光效益。

紅黃色交替的覆輪狀花盤，這是天人菊，一整片花海，實在好美，這裡其實是在澎湖，這也吸引業餘攝影師來獵取美景。

這一大片綠色的，就是銀合歡，早年澎湖人用它來煮飯燒水，隨著時代進步，會抑制其他植物生長的銀合歡，反倒澎湖發展觀光夢魘。因此澎湖縣從去年開始剷除13公頃銀合歡，再編300多萬進行綠美化，如今天人菊綻放，形成美麗花海。

澎湖今年將準備再除掉20公頃銀合歡，就希望利用這些地方，種更多品種的花，能吸引更多人潮。

The Penghu County government has begun to see benefits of a program that involves clearing invasive plant species to make way for flowers. Tourists attracted to the archipelago’s beautiful landscape are posting photos online and in turn encouraging more tourists to visit. 

Perennials known by the name “firewheel” fill the landscape with streaks of red and yellow. The beauty of this sea of flowers attracts amateur photographers to Penghu.

I saw photographs of this field online. Often I see these flowers beside the road, but I hadn’t seen such big and beautiful ones.

This is white popinac. In the past, local residents used it as fuel to boil water, but now it is seen as an invasive species that crowds out other plants. Last year, the Penghu County government cleared 13 hectares and spent more than NT$3 million planting more desirable species, such as the firewheel plants seen today.

You can see many tourists taking photos. These resources increase visibility of Penghu’s tourism industry.

This year Penghu plans to clear another 20 hectares of white popinac fields. It will continue to plant flowers in order to encourage more tourists to visit.

台灣國際遊艇展，即將在下週四登場，今天開始已經有不少遊艇準備進駐高雄展覽館，由於這些遊艇都重達上百噸，因此主辦單位還找來大型吊車，從海面上將遊艇吊起，晚間就會利用拖板車，將八艘遊艇，以陸運的方式，運載到展覽館內陳列。

台灣唯一一部750噸的大型吊車，從空中將遊艇架放入水面，緊接著遊艇慢慢開進來，等到確定安全無慮之後，就能進行吊掛作業。

“船架要對遊艇的記號，如果說沒有對記號，船身會去傷害到 船的底，會傷到 第二就是要調水平，如果說沒有水平 吊起來，會很危險 擔心會滑下去”

由於這些遊艇重量都在100噸以上，每艘都要上千萬到上億元，工作人員必須小心翼翼把它們停放到拖板車上。

遊艇上岸後，再將衛星系統進行組裝、緊接著還要進行清洗作業。

Luxury yachts have begun arriving in Kaohsiung for next week’s opening of the Taiwan International Boat Show. Today a large crane hoisted some yachts onto tractor-trailers so they could be transferred to the exhibition center. 

Taiwan’s only 750-ton crane is placing a special rack into the water to help it lift this luxury yacht. After everything is secure, it begins to lift the boat from the water.

The boat rack must line up properly with the yacht. If it doesn’t, there will be damage to the hull and the bottom of the boat. Secondly, the boat should be perfectly level. If it’s not done properly, it can slide dangerously. 

Due to the extreme weight of these yachts and costs ranging from NT$10 million to 100 million, staff must be careful positioning them in the exhibition center.

After the yacht is dry docked, a satellite system needs to be assembled, which is followed by a thorough cleaning.

The harbor is very close to the exhibition hall, so this use of the crane (for large yachts) is only possible in Kaohsiung. This type of (yacht) exhibition is not just the first of its kind in Taiwan but also a first in Asia.

立法院交通委員會昨天初審通過'鐵路法'草案，提高賣黃牛票罰責，從過去一筆交易，開罰1千元，改為賣多少張，罰多少張，罰金最高為票價到10倍。另外草案也明訂，使用違法程式大量訂票，同樣能開罰最高50萬元。

每逢假期，花東幹線幾乎是一票難求，但很多車票，卻是被黃牛集團訂走，甚至加價出售，嚴重影響民眾權益。為此交通部修改'鐵路法'草案，決定提高罰責。

過去是採取一筆交易開罰一千元。現在則是賣多少張，就罰多少張，罰金上限是票價10倍。不只如此，草案也禁止以違法程式，大量訂票，一但發現，可開罰5萬到50萬元不等。

台鐵祭出重罰，就是希望能遏止黃牛票歪風。

A draft amendment to stamp out railway ticket scalping is making its way through the Legislature. New rules would increase fines for both scalping tickets and using computer programs to make mass purchases. 

When holidays roll around, it is next to impossible to get a seat at a desirable time on railway routes servicing Hualien and Taitung. One reason is many of the tickets are snatched up by scalping agencies which sell them at a premium price. The Ministry of Transportation is attempting to solve this problem with a draft amendment to the Railway Act.

We plan to start basing fines on the price of the ticket. If you scalp a ticket, a fine can be levied of between one and 10 times the face value.

In the past, scalpers received a fine of NT$1,000 per transaction. The new rules would lead to a fine for every ticket sold, up to 10 times the face value. The draft amendment also includes a fine of between NT$50,000 and NT$500,000 for using illegal programs that facilitate volume ticket purchases.

According to the finance minister, several of Taiwan’s wealthiest back proposed tax increases that would raise the highest marginal tax rate from 40 to 45 percent. The measure passed legislative committee yesterday but still has to be approved in two plenary votes. 

There about 9,500 people in Taiwan with net annual income over NT$10 million. Finance Minister Chang Sheng-ford says he’s not worried about a backlash that could result from asking them to pay more in taxes.

Some nuclear power supporters have decided to abstain from voting in a proposed referendum on the Fourth Nuclear Power Plant so the vote doesn’t reach a turnout threshold needed to be valid. Premier Jiang Yi-huah said yesterday that he looks down on those planning to use this tactic. That left him open to criticism in the Legislature today when a DPP lawmaker revealed evidence that Jiang refused to take part in a 2004 referendum. 

DPP Legislator Su Chen-ching displayed a towel that was printed with the phrase “an official who drives the public to revolt” then presented it to Premier Jiang Yi-huah.

Jiang refused to accept it, though Su continued to implore him, displaying comments made by Jiang when he was a professor.

What I have in my hands are Professor Jiang’s words, which I wish to use to instruct Premier Jiang. “Democratic institutions that fail to directly respond to the demands of citizens will lead to protests regarding the legitimacy of the system, commensurate in amount proportional to the government’s degree of insensitivity to the public.”

Regarding Jiang’s comments yesterday that he looked down on citizens who don’t participate in a referendum vote, one legislator had a surprise for him.

In my hands, I have an op-ed piece written in 2004 for the China Times by Professor Jiang where he said he has decided to refuse to receive a (referendum) ballot to express his position on this particular matter.

Jiang clarified that the particular referendum vote he was referring to was one to "strengthen national defense." He continues to believe that no referendum was needed on this issue and said it differs significantly from a referendum on the Fourth Nuclear Power Plant.

President Ma Ying-jeou’s mother Chin Hou-hsiu has died of acute respiratory failure at age 93. She had been diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and was admitted to Taipei’s Wan Fang Hospital last month. 

The hospital says the Ma family has decided not to issue an obituary or rent a funeral hall. Ma was with his mother before she died and will make funerary arrangements over the next several days.
