Tanaka signing gets positive reaction from frustrated Yankee fans (2014/01/23)

Tanaka’s signing made major headlines in New York and the right-hander’s home country. Though the last Japanese pitcher signed by the Yankees, Kei Igawa, did not work out, Yankee fans were upbeat about the move. 

Masahiro Tanaka led the Rakuten Golden Eagles to their first ever title last year. Now he is off to pitch in New York, making people from his native Sendai proud.

As for Yankee fans, they were happy for any ray of hope after the team’s mediocre 2013 showing.

“I’m very excited. I hear great things about him and I hope that he can perform the way that he did in Japan. (We got him. Yes! We got him! Are you serious?!) I’m serious. (Amazing. We need some of this amazing talent from Japan. Thank you so much.)”

Also drawing attention from the media was Tanaka’s wife, a celebrity in her own right. 

She is pop star idol Mai Satoda, who started her career before she was 20 and is four years older than her husband. She has plenty of experience dealing with the media and is expected to help Tanaka deal with the frenzy sure to follow him this season.
