at first sight 是「第一次看到」的意思，所以這句話只適用在原本陌生的人事物上。

1) time saver (n.) 省時的事物(a.) time-saving

plague可指瘟疫、禍害，或惱人的人事物。像躲瘟神一樣躲避某人或某事，也就是避之唯恐不及的意思。

A: Did you date a lot in high school?
你高中有常常約會嗎？

B: No. I avoided girls like the plague.
沒有。我對女生避之唯恐不及。

通常用在當某個人跟你說他試著解決問題的作法，你覺得那應該行得通時，就可以用這句話來回應；但也可活用，表示「某樣東西很管用」。

A: Do you think that girl will stop asking me out if I tell her I’m gay?
你覺得如果我告訴那女孩我是同志，她就不會再邀我出去嗎？

B: That’ll do the trick!
行得通喔！

loop 指的是「圈」，所以in the loop 的意思是被算進某個團體內（因而消息靈通，知情）。out of the loop 則是相反之意。這種團體通常涉及重要決定，用loop 比喻知情者和祕密流通者的圈子。

A: Do you have any idea who’s going to be laid off?
你知道誰會被裁員嗎？

B: No. I’m out of the loop.

hang 有「竅門」、「做法或用法」之意， 片語get / have the hang of... 即指「抓到…… 的竅門，對……上手」，如You’re getting the hang of it.「你漸漸抓到竅門囉」和I’ve got the hang of it.「我已經上手啦」。 

A: Can you eat with chopsticks?
你會用筷子吃飯嗎？

B: Not very well, but I’m starting to get the hang of it.

bandwagon 是遊行隊伍前面的樂隊車，本意為跳上最前面的樂隊車，所以才會引申為加入或支持正在流行的事物。

B: Yeah. I figured it was time to jump on the bandwagon.
是啊，我想該是趕上流行的時候了。

 It is easy to find someone on the phone wherever you go. In fact, it is easy to find lots of people using their phones. Whether it is on the subway, in the park, or at home, we have become dependent on our phones. Thanks to smartphones, we are now able to do just about anything anywhere. They keep us entertained and connected. They can also help us with work and school, not to mention showing us the way to our destinations.

fix 俚語上是吸毒的意思，吸毒的後果當然就是會上癮囉！所以fix也用來形容對某種事物那種不做不暢快的「癮頭」。若想要明確表達某種癮頭，句型為：N + fix。最後記住滿足癮頭的動作一定要用 get，千萬不要用什麼 fulfill 或 satisfy 這樣的字眼，會讓人聽起來一點都不來勁！

picture 在這裡不是指「照片」，必須解釋為「狀況，情勢」，所以 get the picture 是指「瞭解狀況」的意思。

另一個說法是 hit the hay。sack 是床很俚語的名字，也可以指「睡袋」。hit 則是有「去、上」的意思，就像是hit the road 有「上路」的意思。hit the sack當然就是上床睡覺。 

A: Wanna watch another DVD? 
要再看一部DVD 嗎？ 

B: Nah. I think I’m gonna hit the sack.

也可以說 clear sailing。sail 當動詞是「航行」的意思，既然用 smooth（順利的；平穩的）來形容這個航行，當然就是一帆風順，拿來描述事情進行得很順利。

B: The essay questions were kind of hard, but the rest was smooth sailing.

point 是指「論點」，have a point 表示某人說得有道理，用以贊同或肯定某人的看法。 

A: If you want to go out with Jason so badly, why don’t you just ask him out?

B: Hmm, you do have a point. 
嗯，你說得有道理。

這是一種揶揄別人像老人一樣的幽默說法，開玩笑說都老到都要跌斷骨盆了。 

A: The trail looks kind of steep up ahead. 
那條步道前面看起來有點陡。 

B: Careful, grandpa—you don’t want to break a hip, ha-ha! 
歐吉桑，小心呀，你不會想要骨頭都散掉的。

name (v.)為「列舉」的意思，you name it 通常接在一長串的名單之後，因為多到不想再舉例，乾脆跟對方說「只要你說得出來的都有。」

A: What kind of beer do you have? 
你們有哪些啤酒呢？ 

B: We have Heineken, Budweiser, Miller, Kirin, Sapporo... you name it. 
我們有海尼根、百威、米勒、麒麟、三寶樂……你說得出來的我們都有。

bubble 在這句話裡有點像「自己的小世界」之意。burst 是爆開，戳破意思，所以合起來就是潑別人冷水的意思。

A: I think Kristy likes me—I’m gonna ask her out.
克莉絲蒂好像喜歡我，我要約她出去。

B: I don’t mean to burst your bubble, but she has a boyfriend.
我不想要潑你冷水，但是她有男友了。
